HOSTESS: More filling in the Twinkie story

Recent articles on the Hostess Brands Inc. bankruptcy don’t tell the whole story. In fact, they don’t even tell the story as originally written by the cited authors. Understanding that articles are usually edited to fit, it is dismaying to find The News Tribune editing out an important part of the story.

For example, the Nov. 20 Bloomberg News article characterized the Hostess bankruptcy as “forced” by the bakers union strike. Omitted was the portion of the article describing management’s contribution to their predicament by requesting $1.75 million in management bonuses at the same hearing.

On Nov. 22, The News Tribune published an edited New York Times article describing the “winding down” of operations from the perspective of the company and the judge. The News Tribune version left out the profitable potential buyers, the multiple bankruptcies and all statements from workers, union spokesmen and independent scholars.

Your editing leads to the perception that the Hostess bankruptcy was caused by a recent strike that ultimately deprived striking workers and their colleagues of a job and the public of their Twinkies. The original reporting paints a far different picture, one of a company that failed to grow with American tastes, mismanaged assets, and was under pressure to produce bonuses and fees for a venture capital corporation. All employees, including the bakers, made repeated, deep concessions but it wasn’t enough to rescue the company.

I’d prefer the News Tribune to stick to reporting all the facts and allow me to draw my own conclusions.
