Re: “Same sad story – but with frightening stakes” (Eugene Robinson column, 11-20).

Robinson writes: “A disputed border incident provides a spark. Israel reacts with sudden force. Palestinians fire rockets at civilian targets. Israel launches reprisal attacks – first justified, then disproportionate.”

There was no spark. The reason was years-long bombardment of civilians throughout the south of Israel. No rockets, no response. The concept of “disproportionate response” is ludicrous.

The tragedy he describes – “anguished women wail at the funerals of children” – is tempered by the fact that these children live in the schools and homes that the Palestinian utilize as munition factories and storehouses. They become human shields for murderous elements in Palestine.

Robinson writes: “Israel does not have a right … to keep Gaza’s 2 million residents under permanent blockade as punishment for choosing officials of Hamas as their leadership.” Israel does have the right to block Gaza shipments while that government continues its attempts to destroy Israel

Despite Gaza’s goal to eliminate Israel, Israel provides Gaza’s electricity. In addition, the blockade of Gaza has always permitted food, clothing and medicines to be delivered; only those materials that could be utilized in manufacturing weapons to destroy Israel are intercepted.

Third, the blockade is not punishment for whom the citizens’ elected but, rather, the deadly efforts to destroy Israel being perpetrated by those officials.

Robinson admits that Hamas has no right to fire rockets at Israel’s homes, schools, etc. Then he denies Israel the right to respond to this “flare-up” by assassinating the leaders of these monstrous violations of human behavior.
