ISRAEL: Palestinians need responsible leadership

I disagree with Eugene Robinson’s column, “Same sad story – but with frightening stakes.” (TNT, 11-20).

Israel no longer occupies Gaza but completely withdrew in 2005 to promote peace. Unfortunately, the current crisis is not a “flare up” that Israel is using as an excuse to assassinate Palestinian leaders. Hamas and its allies have launched approximately 12,000 rockets and mortar attacks against southern Israel for 12 years with escalated attacks the last two months. Israel is right to target the terrorist infrastructure built by Hamas.

Referring to “effective Palestinian leaders” is a curious way to describe Hamas. They have embedded their terrorist infrastructure in civilian neighborhoods, using their own people as human shields. These are the same leaders who, according to their charter, remain committed to the murder of Jews and the obliteration of Israel rather than peaceful coexistence.

It is time for the international community to denounce and condemn Hamas and their stranglehold on the Palestinians of Gaza who deserve responsible leadership willing to live in peace with their neighbors.
