Re: “Israeli strike leaves 11 dead” (TNT, 11-19).

My husband and I just returned from a two-week vacation in Israel, where both Israeli citizens and U.S. tourists have been under long-term daily rocket attack from Gaza.

This did not start or restart a week ago when the leader of Hamas was killed. I have seen the playgrounds that have colorfully painted bomb shelters as part of the playground equipment, and bomb shelters for bus stops, because the Israelis have only 15 seconds to reach shelter from the Gaza rockets. The Israeli military finally responded by taking out the leader of Hamas in a surgical strike.

Israel did not escalate the violence; it was Hamas that has was increasing the daily rocket attacks until it finally forced Israel into responding. The Israeli families that live near Gaza are shellshocked from the terror of rockets, and even the children suffer from PTSD.

Israel has demonstrated restraint in an effort to minimize killing of innocent through surgical retaliatory strikes, but this is difficult since Hamas practices human shielding. Hamas has the same goals as Hitler did: to murder the Jews. The only difference is now Israel has the power to fight back, to a point.

If someone feels sorry for the Muslims who want to kill the Jews, you may as well feel sorry for the Nazis when they lost World War II. Israelis just want to be left alone, but they are continually attacked by Muslim countries. Israel has the right to protect itself.
