I-502: Let’s proceed with caution on marijuana

In response to the passage of Initiative 502, a recent letter writer (TNT, 11-9) suggested we should change the state’s moniker of “The Evergreen State” to “The EverWeed State.” I thought that was humorous and mused that maybe, back in 1933 when alcohol prohibition ended, we should have made the state’s nickname “The Shot-and-a-Beer State.”

While it’s fun to make cute jokes about the much-needed passage of I-502, the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) is not laughing. The DEA’s very existence depends on substances being banned for the public. The DEA’s salaries, pensions, prestige, health care and other benefits depend on having certain things declared illegal. It is going to fight tooth and nail to defend its monetary and imperial status in the law enforcement community.

That’s not good for those of us in Washington and Colorado who voted to end the insanity of our laws against marijuana.

The bottom line for people who use marijuana and those who may be thinking of trying it is that they should all proceed with caution and discretion. The DEA has harmed and even killed many people since Richard Nixon’s ridiculous war on drugs began in 1971. For those who choose to enjoy marijuana, do so in the privacy of your homes and don’t flaunt it. Be cool, don’t be a fool and become another victim of an arrogant, power-hungry government agency.
