BUSES: Voting yes is the right thing to do

I agree with the Rev. John Koehler in his letter on Pierce Transit Proposition 1 (TNT, 10-28) that we have a social commitment and moral obligation to vote yes on this issue.

It would be unconscionable for me to vote otherwise knowing that so many people are dependent upon the bus system for their social, economic, medical and overall well-being and success. The sacrifice is very small for the taxable and huge for those who will not have access to this critical lifeline. The failure of this proposition would also negatively impact our local socioeconomic infrastructure.

It might be tempting for those who have enough to foster an attitude of  “It’s not my problem: or even “Let them eat cake” as they go about their lives in relative ease without transportation impediments.

As we know, many of those who need the bus system are emotionally fractured and fragile, mentally challenged, homeless, disabled citizens and veterans, the marginal of society, many of whom are unable to work or make a livable wage. Also, many conscientious employed commuters, students and senior citizens are using this service.

Maybe we can all reach into our hearts and give an early Christmas present to those who desperately need this service. It would truly be a gift that would keep on giving. Vote yes to Proposition 1 because it is the humane thing to do. It is the right thing to do.
