A recent News Tribune article points to the connections between Rob McKenna and the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). But many readers may not realize just what ALEC is and how it pushes its right-wing agenda.
ALEC has been a stealth operation funded by the notorious Koch brothers. It has recently become known for its “model legislation” of Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law – the one used to justify the killing of teenager Trayvon Martin.
It is an unholy alliance in which corporations and conservative state legislators meet together in private to decide on legislation to pursue in each state. Unlike other organizations, ALEC gives both legislators and corporate members a voice and a vote in shaping its right-wing policy.
True moderate Republicans would avoid ties to groups like ALEC. Yet McKenna spoke at a private dinner with ALEC, including representatives of Koch Industries, and then sent a note congratulating ALEC.
McKenna also met with the tea party and claimed to be one of them. He can’t have it both ways. It looks to me like he is no moderate. That’s one of many reasons why Jay Inslee is the better choice for governor.
Do we really want a governor who is connected to ALEC?
