MENTAL HEALTH: We’re seeing results of deinstitutionalizing

During the 1980s, we as a people turned the mentally ill out on the streets because we could not afford to care for then in hospitals. We are now seeing the results of this action. Violence is up due to severely mentally ill patients being turnstyled in and out of the hospital. They don’t take their medications when unsupervised and end up having gross hallucinations and violent behavior.

This needs to be re-evaluated and perhaps overturned. Case in point: the young man who killed his father with an ax. He is not well and should have never been released from Western State Hospital.

We as a people are responsible for how we care for our mentally ill citizens and their families. Keeping them in safe hospitals will keep them off the streets and keep us all safer.
