ELECTION: Darnielle’s votes, arguments appalling

Re: “Ad with teen in short skirt may be racy, but it’s right” (TNT, 10-24).

I am appalled by state Rep. Jeannie Darnielle’s votes and her explanations. Her idea that an 18-year-old high school student is old enough to decide how she wants to respond to grooming and sexual advances by a high school teacher reflects a complete lack of understanding of this age group and the manner in which young women can be taken advantage of and exploited.

The power differential between an adult teacher and a young student of that age is a tremendous factor in the ability to groom and exploit. Thankfully, our Legislature understood that and did not vote in the same manner as Darneille.

I also note that Darneille’s campaign is unable to defend these votes of hers and is therefore trying to attack Jack Connelly’s campaign for 27th District state Senate using the strongest adjectives they can. There is an old adage that, if the facts are not on your side, pound on the law. If the law is not on your side, pound on the facts, and if neither is on your side, pound on the table.

Darneille’s campaign is pounding on the table and trying to take attention away from these weird votes of hers against her constituents’ public safety. This specific vote is also against young women and essentially allows them to be taken advantage of. This is wrong.
