ELECTION: Darneille has served community well

Whoever wrote Jack Connelly’s ads has a nose a foot long. What a distortion of state Rep. Jeannie Darneille’s record.

Darneille’s solitary 2001 vote Connelly cites was to keep the sex offender facility out of Pierce County. She didn’t want a disproportionate number of offenders settling here after release. State solutions often become local problems.

The Ethics Board she voted against cost taxpayers $1.1 million per biennium and issued only three fines for $150 in two years. Do the math.

Darneille restored voting rights for felons only after their sentences were served. Last session she kept the Washington State History Museum open in Tacoma.

She’s not soft on crime. This August, she spotted and chased a burglar, which helped lead to his capture. The Washington Coalition of Sexual Assault Programs named Darneille its 2012 Legislator of the Year. The Washington Council of Police & Sheriffs, Tacoma Police Union Local #6, the Washington State Troopers Association, Washington Fire Chiefs, and 40 more community groups and labor unions endorse her.

The Washington Education Association, the Tacoma Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers recognize her leadership in education funding.

Darneille helped me establish the Emergency Food Network in 1982, became director in 1983, and was instrumental in starting and funding the first Zoolights in 1988. Then she directed the Pierce County AIDS Foundation for 18 years. She has served out community well.

Jeannie doesn’t stand back, she stands out. She can’t buy your vote, but you can give it.

(Flannigan is a retired 27th District state legislator.)
