BUSES: Demoralization if Prop. 1 is defeated

Numerous and onerous will be the trickle-down effects accompanying extraordinary cut to bus service should Pierce Transit Proposition 1 be defeated.

Many of our impoverished neighbors are working two and three off-hour jobs to try to make ends meet. Without transportation, their only option is to quit these jobs. The costs of mental health problems, not to mention the more obvious costs in lost revenue in sales taxes, additional burdens on “safety net” resources, etc., that accompany unemployment need to be taken into account.

It is immoral to stick it to our neighbors this way. The voter’s pamphlet statement by the opponents makes very clear that they simply want to break the system altogether. Their use of leftist language to further a far-right agenda is troubling.

They may or may not want to rebuild the transit system in the aftermath of its demise, but that is far down the road if at all. This breakage will occur on the backs of our most vulnerable citizens and will only result in demoralization, further unemployment, and increasing economic and environmental loss.
