I was shocked when I read that Jack Connelly had contributed almost $1 million to his own campaign to beat state Rep. Jeannie Darneille in the race for the 27th district Senate seat (Political Buzz, 10-18).
As a member of the House, Darneille has been a stalwart defender of services that help the most vulnerable members of our community. She has stood up to preserve safety net services and funds to help end homelessness, and been successful in those efforts. Her understanding of the needs of families struggling in this difficult economy is one of the best reasons to send her to the Senate.
Connelly, on the other hand, seems out of touch with our district. I did some simple math. The average rent for a two-bedroom apartment in Pierce County is $929 per month. The $988,383 he contributed to his own campaign could provide a home for 88 struggling families for a full year.
It’s too bad he’s spending it to beat someone who’s already an effective champion for those same families.
