Re: Initiative 502.

As a parent, I am for legalizing marijuana and no, I do not smoke marijuana myself or have it in my house. I’m sure some kids will get access to this substance because of legalization, but it won’t solely be because it’s been legalized.

The bigger issue for me is the criminal records that have been accumulated over the years by the possession of this substance. Some young people’s entire future has been altered by their simple experimentation with this substance.

I’m actually more concerned with their access to alcohol, because it does even worse damage in the long run. Alcohol is the real gateway drug of choice for most kids. Let’s not be hypocrites and make one illegal and leave one on the table. These kids know what hypocrisy is.

I can’t stop my children from trying marijuana if they really wanted to get this drug. It’s so readily available on the street that I’m sure they could get access within a few hours of trying. Legalizing it will not alter this fact one bit.

We need to educate our children, not assume a law will stop their access to something if they really want to have it. Teach them love; it’s the only real deterrent there is.
