Re: “McCarthy for executive” (editorial, 10-9).
The News Tribune’s endorsement of Pierce County Executive Pat McCarthy’s re-election was so brief that it didn’t mention any of her many accomplishments. I was proud to work with her on a project that will make everyone in Pierce County safer.
I spent 35 years as a firefighter in this community, and one of the biggest challenges we face is communicating in the field with other police, fire and dispatch agencies because so many operate different systems that can’t quickly connect with each other. As McCarthy considered the county’s own needs in this area, she saw an opportunity to bring partners together, eliminate the “silo” approach and work together to create a seamless network.
She brought together the Lakewood Police Department, West Pierce Fire & Rescue, Tacoma Fire Department, Tacoma Police Department and the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office. Then she worked on outreach to smaller cities and agencies, most of which have contracts for services with the larger agencies. She got them to agree on a common mission – that each agency could address its own unique needs if each gave up some turf and worked together for the common good.
Pierce County voters strongly approved of this collaborative approach, and now all of the partners are working hard to implement that vision.
It took a lot of hard work by a lot of people. And it succeeded because of McCarthy’s vision and leadership.
