ELECTION: Why is TNT smearing Troy Kelley?

I have been dismayed over the past three months with The News Tribune’s coverage of the race for state auditor. You have consistently disseminated the false and spurious accusations of the inferior candidate, James Watkins, presenting these accusations as factual when they are anything but, amounting to attempted character assassination of his opponent, Troy Kelley.

It is as if we were back to the “good old days” of yellow journalism and muckraking. It is one thing to pursue the story of a genuinely unbalanced public servant run amok; it is quite another to sully the reputation of an upstanding and honest public servant and candidate for government office, all for the sake of selling newspapers.

It is clear to any objective observer that Watkins, knowing he is less qualified for the state auditor position, has resorted to mudslinging.

Kelley has never been arrested, cited for nor convicted of any crime; he has not been disbarred from his practice as an attorney. He has served honorably in the state Legislature as three-term representative, as well as in the Army Reserves, where he has been promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel.

The News Tribune has truly abandoned all pretenses to providing journalistic objectivity and fairness. Shame!
