BUSES: Riders should pay up or walk

Lately there have been quite a few letters about Pierce Transit and its budgetary problems. In my opinion this economic downturn has created one good thing. It has forced us to look at just what we are funding and how much.

It is time for those who ride the bus to pay what it costs. If you want a bus system, pay for it.

I just looked up what it costs to run a car in our area. It is 56.6 cents per mile. A good piece of this is gas taxes that are supposed to pay for keeping our roads in repair. To those of you who drive in Tacoma, you know that this is a bad joke.

So pay to keep the bus system working if you want it and designate some of the gas tax money from the fuel the buses consume for road repair.
