It appears that too few know the real Jack Connelly, who is running for state Senate in the 27th Legislative District, from political ads and recent letters to the editor.
I coached Connelly on Tacoma Swim Club for about 14 years from a young age group swimmer through his progression into the senior national training group that competed nationally and internationally. This group experienced extremely intensive training, and it extended throughout the year and for many years.
Personal characteristics are vividly on display daily. Connelly was a most respected member of this group. He always had the discipline to succeed in this environment. He had the respect of his teammates for his work ethic and leadership.
I found him to be as highly motivated and as competitive as any swimmer I ever had the privilege to coach. He has continued to display these same traits throughout his career.
It seems to me that those qualities would make a great state senator, and I never knew him to “go along to get along.” He is a man of convictions grounded in the good common sense that is too often lacking in politics.
