TACOMA: Union official offers no alternative

I had to reread the Viewpoint (TNT, 10-6) by union official Tracey Thompson several times. Nowhere did she offer a solution to the fiscal crisis facing Tacoma.

She states, “(T.C.) Broadnax wants to solve the city’s colossal structural problem overnight.”

Well, the fiscal crisis is at the door. Bills are due. I will agree the City Council has been very effective in “kicking the can down the road.” Dedicated funds have been transferred from one account to another. Short-term debt has been refinanced into longer-term debt. Grants from the federal government are solicited to pay for local employee wages and benefits.

It’s time to make choices. Somehow the entire Viewpoint smacks of the issues at the federal, state, county and local government levels. The issues are increase revenues and decrease expenses, although I suspect Thompson has precluded decreasing expenses.

If you’re going to chastise Broadnax for doing his job, please at least present an alternative solution.
