ELECTION: Ex-felons can register to vote

I’m writing to remind readers that felons who are no longer incarcerated or on community custody are, with a few exceptions, eligible to vote even if they have not paid their fines and other expenses. The only exceptions occur when someone files with the court accusing an ex-felon of negligence in paying fines.

If a felon is unsure, he or she can call 1-800-448-4881 for more information. Otherwise, they should assume that they can vote and should register immediately. People can register to vote online at www.myvote.wa.gov, or they can obtain a form and register my mail. Registrations must be postmarked by Saturday, Oct. 6. Following that, voters must contact their county elections office for in-person voting options.

The more who vote, the better for our democracy.
