BIAS: Discrimination is never acceptable

Letter by Charissa J. Webber, Puyallup on Sep. 25, 2012 at 2:28 pm with 28 Comments »

Re: I read Leonard Pitts Jr.’s column (TNT, 9-23) that mentioned a bumper sticker that read: “2012 Don’t Re-Nig.”

That is a sad commentary on society. It is equally as sad as a society that judges a contender for president based upon his religion and whatever the perceptions or misconceptions of that religion may be.

Discrimination is discrimination, and it should never be acceptable. Unfortunately, some people will never get it.

  1. Whoa Charissa….don’t believe the bumper sticker Pitts referenced was about religion.

  2. Frankenchrist says:

    “2012 Don’t Re-Nig.”

That’s typical teabagger humor. The mouth-breathers and knuckle-draggers in the GOP love the “N-word” and they use every opportunity to use it either directly or indirectly.

Repukes are still angry that the South lost the Civil War.

  3. don’t believe the bumper sticker Pitts referenced was about religion.

True dat. However, since there are still many Tpotters out there who insist that Obama is a “muzlim” when they aren’t getting all upset about an excerpt from a sermon that Rev. Wright gave, it is pretty safe to connect those thoughts.

  4. menopaws says:

I think she was referring to Mr. Romney being Mormon………Prejudice is the product of weak minds. doesn’t matter if it is racial or religious—you are talking about the bottom of most barrels. Good letter and I agree with what she said.

  5. The letter could have been more clear, but we get it. The only slight caveat I would add concerns whether a President’s religion unduly influences policies he sets forth for all of us.
There is a danger lurking should Mr. Romney prevail. I say that because we really don’t know who he is and though I will not vote for him there may be others who are misguided enough to do so.

  6. re-nig is one thought, religion is in the next paragraph.
they are not one in the the same, though they are born of the same mistrust of that guy who supposedly isn’t like the rest of us (and just happens to be black)…

  7. alindasue says:

Clearly “re-nig” is a racial reference and has nothing to do with religion.

However, religious discrimination affects both sides of the current presidential race. Whether it be the people who insist that President Obama is a Muslim when he’s not (and so what if he were?) or the people who won’t vote for Mitt Romney just because he’s a Mormon, it’s still the same religious discrimination.

I agree with Ms. Webber. I don’t care what side of the presidential race it’s on: “Discrimination is discrimination, and it should never be acceptable. Unfortunately, some people will never get it.”

  8. What is it with TPotters and their repeated use of the word “ilk”? It is like they all belong to some sort of paranoid delusional cult influenced by the sociopathic writings that glorify a selfish terrorist of a hypocrite who became a “looter” who collected Social Security and Medicare when she got sick.

  9. Who you associate with speaks volumes about who you are. #OWS clowns and truthers…

  10. Frankenchrist blabbers with, “The mouth-breathers and knuckle-draggers in the GOP love the “N-word” and they use every opportunity to use it either directly or indirectly.”

I am both Republican and Conservative (No, they are NOT one and the same!) I can tell you I abhor the “n-word” and never does it speak from my tongue….

However I will make the clear DISCRIMINATION that “Frankenchrist” is a twit.

  11. LeePHilI says:

“I am both Republican and Conservative (No, they are NOT one and the same!) I can tell you I abhor the “n-word” and never does it speak from my tongue….”

So…I’m guessing that the next time you get the opportunity, you don’t lump all Muslims with those that are terrorists because you didn’t like to be painted with the same brush as the racists in the Republican Party?

  12. And we’ve never seen evidence of religious bigotry from at least five of left leaning responders in this thread, LOL. Heck, right up-thread here, we see that Pub can’t even resist the temptation to throw in the same bigoted, cryptic threat (that the Mormon church will be pulling the strings in a Romney White House) as was used in 1960 against the Catholic candidate.

Obviously, the point of the letter is hypocrisy.

  13. aislander says:

So…beerBoy what collective shorthand would you suggest to replace “ilk” as meaning socialistic/socialist-leaning, demagogic, race-baiting, leveling, kleptocratic, envious, officious, busybodies?

I suppose I could take a page from ehill and create a macro that would insert “socialistic/socialist-leaning, demagogic, race-baiting, leveling, kleptocratic, envious, officious, busybodies” with a single keystroke.

    That work for you, beers?

  14. The brush some of you use to paint Republicans and conservatives is heavy with stereotype and makes you as guilty of judgmentalism and bias as anyone else.

The bumper sticker is disgusting and reflects absolutely nothing about republicans and/or conservatives in general.

  15. averageJose says:

First off, a bumper sticker only speaks to the one displaying it.

Second, is it any surprise that the Obama campaign and their ilk would try to inject race at any and every opportunity… after-all, it can be said that’s what got him elected in the first place.

Thirdly, whether there really is such a bumper sticker is suspect… AND don’t rule out that it’s possible and probable that one of Obama’s ilk could be resposible for it…

    Google false hate crimes

  16. aislander says:

I forgot to include “authoritarian and coercive” in my proposed macro for a description of leftism…

  17. “socialistic/socialist-leaning, demagogic, race-baiting, leveling, kleptocratic, envious, officious, busybodies”

Ahh, more name-calling from aiSlander. What a surprise.

  18. aislander says:

The truth is a perfect defense against a charge of “slander” (you wanted the word libel, since you are apparently objecting to something I wrote, but the truth is a perfect defense against libel as well as slander), and I wrote the truth…

Oh, and I forgot to include “mendacious” in my accurate description of the left.

  19. tree_guy says:

Pitts never said the Re-Nig bumper sticker belonged to a white person. He didn’t know because he didn’t see it. Unless someone can establish a connection between the white population in general and the presence of one or two of these stickers then Pitts column and this letter to the editor are really just racial jibberish. People who publish this nonsense are race bating.

  20. “The truth is a perfect defense against a charge of “slander”

As you’ve demonstrated in here many times, any connection between you and “the truth” is coincidental at best.

  21. Thirdly, whether there really is such a bumper sticker is suspect… AND don’t rule out that it’s possible and probable that one of Obama’s ilk could be resposible for it…

    Wow!

I didn’t take a picture of it but I have, indeed, seen such a bumpersticker on a truck in Idaho.

To claim a false flag operation is rather stupefying.

  22. And, again, why the popularity of the word “ilk” with the “conservative” keyboardists? You all seem to use it.

  23. aislander says:

beerBoy: See my 8:37 AM comment, but if you are wondering why a collective word is warranted where lefties are concerned, there are more commonalities among you guys than there are differences.

Oh one lefty may not be a race-baiter, for example, but still possess many or all of the other “qualities” I enumerated.

Oh, and I forgot to add “divisive.”

However, I am not married to the word “ilk.” That is not legal in this state and would constitute a perversion, anyway.

So suggest an alternative to “ilk…”

  24. Oh lookie there….Looks like “LeePHill is a twit too! Just gotta dig for anything your twisted little minds can dig aintcha.

It is SO much fun just sitting back and watching some of these LocalLiberal nitwits paint their own twisted portraits.

    So predictable, and so pathetic.

  25. LeePHill….I will “lump” only one group….The Local Liberal Loonie Tunes Of Tacoma with The National Association Of Pathetic Lunatics….there ya go, I displayed complete unfettered discrimination!

    Happy now?

    :D
