TERRORISM: Don’t risk diplomats’ lives

In this day and age of instant worldwide communications, do we really need to put the lives of our diplomats and their families in grave danger by physically staffing embassies in which known hate-America terrorist groups operate with virtual impunity?

No matter where they are or what they are doing, American presidents and the members of our diplomatic corps are able to remain in full contact with their counterparts anywhere in the world, and the day-to-day activities that our embassies now conduct in nations in which terrorism flourishes could be conducted from communication centers here in the U.S. without risking American lives.

So now when our country is not just broke but hopelessly in debt, why do we continue to borrow billions from the Chinese who hate us to give to countries like Egypt, Libya and Pakistan in which the “Death to America” chant gets louder and louder with every passing day and our diplomats and security personnel have to live in fear for their lives? It beats the hell out of me.

Why do we do it? Because, embassies aren’t just the place that ambassadors live, and maintaining personal relations with foreign leaders isn’t the only thing that embassy staff do. Embassies and consulates serve as a safe place for Americans to go to when they are abroad. When you lose your passport in another country, your embassy or consulate issues you a new one so you can travel. When there is unrest in the country you’ve traveled to, your embassy or consulate will take you in and protect you. When natural disasters, terror attacks, or war make it impossible for you to get back home through conventional means, your embassy or consular staff are the ones that make sure you can get home safe. When you or your loved one dies abroad, these people are the ones that make sure your remains are repatriated.

These services require staff on site, and that is why we have to put diplomats in harm’s way. But it’s not as if we don’t protect that staff. Every embassy has a detachment of Marines assigned to it, and every ambassador has a protective detail from the Diplomatic Security Service (sort of like the Secret Service, but for diplomats).

  2. “So now when our country is not just broke but hopelessly in debt……”
Not true. A good part of the debt was created on purpose. If you don’t understand the economics, you should read a little more in your spare time instead of writing untrue comments to the paper.

This is the dumbest letter I’ve ever read in the TNT.

  4. lylelaws says:

So where were the Marine security guards when the murders occured?

Maybe you would feel secure with members of your family going to American embassies for protection in counries in which terrorist mobs run amok but I sure to hell wouldn”t.

  5. averageJose says:

As long as Obama is more interested in placating the crazy jihad muslims than protecting our people we will see this happen again.
He’s over his head… waaay over his head.

Obama, Obama, we are all Osama

  6. APimpNamedSlickback says:

You ask where were the Marines? At the embassy in Tripoli. The attack occurred at the consulate in Benghazi.

And yes, I am secure with my family taking refuge in an embassy when they’re in a country with terrorist mobs running amok. I’d certainly rather they do that than be the only American in the street facing that mob; but if you feel differently, let me know how that works out for your loved ones.

My error, I thought our embassy and our consulate were one in the same.

We never get too old to learn, so thanks for helping me understand.

  8. lylelaws says:

Yes, I do believe we are hopelessly in debt and no matter where the blame lies it is getting worse day-by-day because we continue to spend money we don’t have.

Please explain how a “Good part of the debt was created on purpose.”
