FAIR: Name change shows a lot of gall

Re: “‘Do the Puyallup’ won’t change” (TNT, 9-20).

I could not believe the gall of the Western Washington Fair Association in changing the name of the Puyallup Fair to the Washington State Fair. Since when did Puyallup become Washington State?

Being from Yakima/Central Washington, I am a bit irritated with the thought that everything in this state revolves around Western Washington. There are several fairs throughout the state, and they are all named according to where they are located. Considering the “fan base” for the Puyallup fair is mostly Pierce County, wouldn’t it be more appropriate to call it the Pierce County Fair?

Having grown up with the Central Washington State Fair for most of my life, I am saddened to know that now there is only one fair for me to attend. I assume that all other fairs are now obsolete.

That being said, I am headed home to Yakima in late September to visit the second (or is it third) largest fair in the state and not pay more than $10 for an Earthquake burger.

  1. It seems it’s pretty easy for some people to get their knickers in a knot.

  2. At least the Spokane Interstate Fair is fairly named.

You should storm the office of some Tacoma based company in downtown Yakima and drag the general manager through the streets while burning effigies of Pat McCarthy.

  4. Pierce county already has a fair the sad part it suck and it’s more of a 4H competition than an actual fair

So are you saying that the slogan of the folks in Yakima should be “Screw the Puyallup?”

I grew up in Zillah and some of my fondest childhood memories are of the Yakima Fair, but the Puyallup Fair is like it’s big brother.

I agree that the name should not be changed, because the name Washington State Fair sounds cold and stuffy.

The powers to be want to change the name of the fair. The powers to be want to change the name of University Place. Lots of time & money being spent on the ridiculous. . .
