R-74: Marriage debate must remain civil

Re: “A yes vote says God made a mistake” (letter, 9-18).

What I believe to be a relevant issue that seemingly is being overlooked is that marriage is a civil act, and religion has nothing to do with it. Comments such as “strange gender equality” and “persistent rejection of God’s instruction for marriage” have no place in a civil environment.

Religious environments have created endless amounts of mental and physical anguish. One has only to consider the Crusades of earlier times for constructive examples.

    well said Terry.

Using religion as the basis for argument against same sex marriage is like the govt outlawing all birth control methods because the Catholic Church is against birth control.

Some people just can’t grasp, or refuse to accept, that our civil laws are secular.

  2. MyBandito says:

Abide by your religion but allow the law of the land to accommodate the greater good.

  3. LeePHilI says:

I don’t think I’ve seen the proponents of gay marriage try to require that heterosexuals marry someone of the same sex…..

  4. truthbusterguy says:

    Preserve Marriage, REJECT R-74

Please don’t dilute the marriage club by allowing same sex couple to join the club reserved for a MAN and a WOMAN.

  5. sandblower says:

truthy will never get it. Of that I am convinced.

  6. LeePHilI says:

    “the marriage club”??????????

    Oh geeeeeeeeeezzz…..LMAO

  7. the marriage club

Is that the club that the male neanderthal uses to knock out the female neanderthal before dragging her back to his cave?

  8. Must remain civil? I think somebody is missing reality. This has never been a civil discussion nor has it ever been a civil matter created by the state.

Promoters of changing the definition of marriage are civil only until they can’t obtain submission from the mainstream; then they get nasty. They are intolerant, just like the left is on most issues.

Family is a unit upon which society is built and civilized. Family is a husband and wife that are intended to become also father and mother. Deviations from this design do not benefit society when those deviations are intended primarily to benefit the individuals that are deviating.

The R-74 tail should not be wagging the centuries-of-tradition dog. Live your lifestyle and stop trying to force acceptance.

We get it Terry, you’re a prog. Progs aren’t tolerant of free speech when it goes against their beliefs.
Thanks for giving us another example.

  10. LeePHilI says:

“Family is a husband and wife that are intended to become also father and mother.”

Wrong. Many marriages and families don’t procreate.

    “stop trying to force acceptance”

Am I in the South States, circa 1950s?????

We get it Josie…you’re a CON. CONS misconstrue statements

Looks like the writter is against free speech.

Hills’ have a reading comprehension problem.

    ;) writer

  14. normajean says:

How does one register for the ”marriage club?” Inquiring minds want to know

  15. MyBandito says:

normajean- One does not. Two do. R-74 is about which two get to.

  16. slugoxyz says:

the discussion must remain “civil”? You mean unlike most marriages? Anybody who wants to get married can have it as far as I’m concerned. It’s difficult work. There have been times in my life that I wish they had taken the right away from me. “…Yes honey? No, I’m not talking about you. Coming dear…”

  17. tacomascene says:

“Civil,” as being not criminal nor religious.
“Religious,” as being not civil nor criminal.
“Criminal,” as being not civil nor religious.

Religion has nothing to do with how fast I can drive my car up and down Pacific Avenue or how many fish I can catch during season or whether my dog has to have a license.

    Makes sense to me….

  18. tacomascene says:

PGROUP, “Family is a unit upon which society is built and civilized. Family is a husband and wife that are intended to become also father and mother. Deviations from this design do not benefit society when those deviations are intended primarily to benefit the individuals that are deviating.”

Have you any idea as to just how many societies there might be in this world that do not conform to what Americans refer to as society, yet are progressive and functional?

I can’t help but disagree with your entire comment; but you are more than welcomed to advocate for your precepts and principles just as much as I am entitled to advocate for mine.
