Re: “Center of Detention” series.

It was about a year and a half ago that I visited a “detainee” at that infamous place down on the Tideflats. I remember wishing at the time that such colossal evil, such gross inhumanity, should be exposed for all the world to see.

And now, this exposé appears in The News Tribune. I read every word, and as I read there welled up in me a terrible rage against all the power brokers and government agencies involved in that entire system with their blatant disregard for law, their lies, their rampant corruption – and the awful human toll on families and individuals.

Pogo was right: “We have met the enemy and the enemy is us.”

Whatever happened to the biblical injunction to welcome the stranger? And what would have happened if those long ago Native Americans had treated their European invaders in the same manner? After all, our ancestors were the alien immigrants.

I salute the bravery and dogged perseverance of all those involved in this report and the publishing of it. Thanks ever so much.

We love our freedom almost as much as we like locking people up who look different.

  2. normajean says:

Is that why we lock people up because they look different. What obvious points are being missed here.
