MEDIA: Watch wide variety to get the truth

I am a Libertarian and like to hear other Libertarians on the news analysis shows I watch. The only channels that have any Libertarian speakers at all are Fox News and Fox Business Channel.

Judge Andrew Napolitano and John Stossel are two great Libertarian celebrities who often have on-air discussions with guests from Reason Magazine and the Cato Institute. Both are great Libertarian organizations.

Some people think Fox misinforms or underinforms its viewers. Those people criticize Fox for having a conservative (and somewhat Libertarian) bias. What these people don’t realize is that all media have bias in one way or another.

Most of the media are clearly biased towards Democrats, progressives and liberals. There really aren’t so many TV channels with a conservative bias (save Fox) and even fewer with any Libertarian opinion. No one can deny that ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, MSNBC, Current TV, RT-TV and others are biased towards the left. To pretend that they aren’t left-leaning is simply ignoring reality.

So, to suggest that Fox viewers are misinformed or underinformed indicates that the persons making those suggestions are misinformed and underinformed themselves. Andrea Mitchell at MSNBC is really no more unbiased than Sean Hannity at Fox.

Viewers must watch a wide variety of news sources to be informed. Fox News and Fox Business Channel are just two of the many channels viewers should watch to get the whole truth.

  1. Frankenchrist says:

Fox, MSNBC and CNN are not “news analysis shows.” They are entertainment for people who want their beliefs validated.

Try the BBC, CBC, C-SPAN, or PBS if you want real news.

  2. menopaws says:

Frankenchrist: Amen!!!! those are the stations I watch…….CBC is a personal favorite, but PBS is excellent…..Maybe that’s why the Republicans are always trying to cut their funding……..PBS does the most impartial job of all of the American news organizations…….

  3. “to suggest that Fox viewers are misinformed or underinformed”

    … is accurate: http://publicmind.fdu.edu/2011/knowless/

  4. Thanks, ehill, for providing the link. I am convinced there were a few studies documenting this. Also, at least one documentary exposing FoxNews’ propaganda techniques.

To the original letter writer: you are conflating “biased” with “not objective”. Rachel Maddow is biased and snarky, but does her best to be objective and factual. Same for Krugman, except less snark. Ezra Klein is biased, and bends over backwards to be objective.

Fox do not claim to be objective and correct, only “fair and balanced”. Just the fact that they constantly repeat this (“no spin”, etc.) is an indication how truthful it is, and in itself an example of propaganda. And the criticism is not that they are biased, but that they lie, misrepresent, omit, obfuscate and do not make a minimum effort to be objective.
