I find it extremely difficult to vote for any Republican because the philosophy of the Republican Party is to destroy the programs that allowed me to become a productive member of society.
My father made only enough money to rent a $30 per month apartment and put food on the table. Seeing a doctor was a luxury that we could seldom afford, and it killed my father at 52. We ate a lot of macaroni and cheese, beans and a stew of ground beef, potatoes and whatever else was available.
My disability prohibited me from getting any type of employment. I was unable to make any money for college. However, because of my disability, the state of West Virginia paid my tuition and an allowance for books at any state college or university.
My father’s Social Security gave me $140 per month for four years as long as I remained in school. This and help from my grandfather allowed me to live at WVU, where I finished my degrees. These helped me get a job at the West Virginia Department of Highways. I moved to San Francisco and joined Chevron in late 1980 and retired to Olympia in 2003.
So the “handout” allowed me to become a contributing member of society, pay more taxes and contribute much more to Social Security than I ever would have in any menial job that I might have been able to get in my hometown.
