Congratulations to the team at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium for creating a wonderful video of Nellie the sea otter. Nellie stacks her set of three cups with adorable concentration. She looks at her trainer for approval of her skills. In the end Nellie does a cute high-five with the trainer along with her sea otter buddy.

The video has a worldwide audience of over one million. Nellie has given the world and our community a positive and cute bit of news!

That over 1 million number (currently 1,110,700) is just in YouTube views. That not counting all the other sites that now have it up! Out of curiosity yesterday, I Googled “point defiance nellie” and went through seven pages of links for this video!

She and the other four girls – Homer, Abra, Kaladi, and Libby – are always a joy to watch.

By the way, there are only two of the otter pups rescued from the Exxon-Valdez spill still alive. Kenai at Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium and Homer at Point Defiance. She’s getting old, but she’s still just as cute and beautiful as she ever was.

It would be interesting to know how many have watched Nellie worldwide as this video has gone viral on many different websites. No wonder – the video is very special.

  3. It’s a shame that Nellie lives in a area just a little bigger than a kiddie pool

Toogan – Perhaps you should ask the zoo keepers for the exact dimensions of the otter pool to verify you comment. It’s a shame that you feel compelled to be so negative.

I don’t know the actual dimensions of the sea otter display pool, but I’ve seen it often enough that I can make a guesstimate that it’s close to the size of a high school swimming pool. They also have another pool in the back outside of the public viewing area and the gate between them is usually open for them to go back and forth between the public and private areas when they want to. Often all five of the girls are playing together in the display pool, but not always.

They do seem very well taken care of and happy in their environment at Point Defiance.
