AKIN: Kernel of truth in comment

Re: “Akin’s ignorance puts focus on GOP’s ‘war on women'” (Eugene Robinson column, 8-21).

Everyone is running away from Todd Akin’s comment (that rape rarely leads to pregnancy), but it does contain a kernel of truth.

No one seems to recall that zoologist Desmond Morris made a similar point in his book, “The Naked Ape.” He thought that the evolution of intense emotional human pair bonding fostered modes of physical intimacy that enhanced the probability of fertilization, such as the couple lying together after copulation instead of the woman walking or running away.

Although it may not be germane to the right to life v. freedom of choice argument, Akin’s comment did not arise solely from benighted ignorance as Robinson and everyone else believes.

  1. ThinkerDem says:

So. maybe all the 32,000 women a year who get pregnant as a result of rape just need to jump up immediately and walk or run away from the rapist. Well, shame on them for being so lazy! The child who is raped by an adult relative in her bed may find it difficult to walk or run away, as would a woman who is captive until the rapist decides to free her. How long before we see jump ropes marketed as a “minutes after” contraceptive, followed by a GOP law protecting a possible fertilized egg? Oh, right…the Paul Ryan, Tod Akin co-sponsored “personhood” bill has that covered. BTW, Desmond Morris was writing as an anthropologist, not a gynecologist.

  2. SandHills says:

Adding gas to the fire, aren’t you Jesse?

Heck, the ONLY substantive aspect that the issue of rape and pregnancy has is that many of us today would not be here if not for rape. The Angles and Saxons who invaded England and displaced the Celts, the numerous Viking incursions, then the Normans (with such traditions as “lords right of the first night”), are but a few examples in history. Many rapes, and many pregnancies resulted.

And that is just me who can claim English blood, then there is the example of the slaveowner/slaves here in America – I am sure all the births coming out of those relationships were the result of consensual sex.

One can agree that a woman’s emotional, mental, and physical, state enhances pregnancy. One can also say such “enhanced” conditions may not be present in the case of rape (forcible or not). But to state that the biological aspects of sperm swimming up to impregnate an egg is altered/prevented by rape…well that just goes against the facts of biology and of human history. Not all rapes cause pregnancy, just as any single act of sexual intercourse (even under the best conditions of fertility) does.

But it is a real stretch to try and make a political point on women’s healthcare out of the issue that rape does not result in pregnancy. That GOP platform leaning toward such rationale has put a big hole in the SS Romney hull, even if Ryan is already trying to backtrack.

  3. surething says:

Jesse, You should be totally embarrassed about this letter.

Perhaps you need to take a sex education class and join up with the rest of us in the real world.

  4. Chippert says:

Romulus and Remus… sorry… Romney and Ryan may be franticly backpedalling away from Akin but at heart they are one and the same. Take a look at the anti-abortion bills Ryan has co-sponsored that over and over use the term “forcible rape” to attempt to deny the right of an abortion to the thousands of women subjected to date rape, rape while intoxicated, statutory rape, etc – in short, anything but Rape 1.

And listen to Mike Huckabee try to justify Akin’s comments by pointing out the number of famous persons who are the product of a rape. It’s not just Akin, it is the ingrained in the philosophy of the entire Republican belief pattern. They can disavow it now but let them in power and they will attempt to put in laws abrogating the ability of a woman to obtain an abortion in any situation other than Rape 1 – and even then it might be prevented.

  5. SwordofPerseus says:

‘slander, wasn’t it you who was commenting on the fact that we are not “animals”? Here’s your sign. The right wing of politics in this country is infested with the worst kind of animals. Wild, savage, thoughtless animals.

  6. Frankenchrist says:

There is no truth in Republican Todd Akin’s comment, not even a kernel. Akin is an idiot and his statement arose soley from his right-wing idiocy.

  7. aislander says:

Akin’s theory about rape and conception actually had currency back in the 1970s, based on a study by the Guttmacher Institute…

  8. Frankenchrist says:

Wrong. Akin’s theory of rape and conception has only ever had currency with the ignorant right-wing Christofascist GOP Taliban.

  9. aislander says:

So…Planned Parenthood is (was?) a member of the “right-wing Christofascist GOP Taliban?”

I knew that is was founded by Margaret Sanger, the arch-racist progressive–which movement was related to the actual fascist movement–and has lived up to its charge of limiting the African-American population by aborting over 30 million black babies over the years. Guttmacher is, of course, under the umbrella of Planned Parenthood…

  10. ::::::sigh:::::::

Every time I start to enjoy you again, you have to post some inflammatory idiocy like the above.

  11. aislander says:

Point out ONE thing that’s not true, beerBoy.

As for “inflammatory idiocy,” did yuh read the comment to which I responded?

  12. aislander says:

The ironic (sense 5) thing is that Sanger was opposed to abortion…

  13. Fibonacci says:

    Jesse
Even if what you say is true ( I red this book but don;t remember it saying anything about rape and pregnancy) why would you pour gasonline on the fire by bringing it up?

  14. Fibonacci says:

    That would be gasoline.

  15. tellnolies says:

“Akin’s theory” aislander? ROFLMAO! That’s WAY more than generous, it’s completely ludicrous. Theory? It’s a load of horse crap, not a theory.

As for the letter writer’s “Naked Ape,” it’s claims are pseudoscience, along the lines of “Chariots of the Gods”, rather than a scientific treatise.

Please link the Guttmacher study that makes that claim aislander.
It appears google can’t produce one. Tried several searches with NADA supporting your claim

  16. SwordofPerseus says:

    “I read this book…” ;(

  17. SwordofPerseus says:

‘slander, are you getting lazy? Seems you’re off your game lately.

“Akin’s theory” – ha that moron should crawl back under the rock he was hatched from. I predict that this is just one more in a long line of laughable gaffs from the dying GOP, on their downhill slide to defeat in November.

  18. LeePHill says:

    :::::just shaking his head::::::

  19. aislander says:

Guttmacher has been paired in references to Dr. Fred Mecklenburg, the author of the 1972 study that formed the basis for Akin’s claims. Guttmacher did a statistical analysis of abortions performed by Planned Parenthood and found that only 1% of pregnancies that were terminated were due to rape or incest, far below the number that would be expected (so to speak…).

To reiterate: Guttmacher did not endorse Mecklenburg, but its findings have been used to support his study, therefore they have been cited together, although mostly in pro-life contexts.

  20. menopaws says:

What is the deal with the right and women???? It just stuns me how so many aspects of a woman’s life appears to need meddling with from white men with bad haircuts and expensive suits………..I am not one bit interested in whether they take viagra, have hair plugs, or are in therapy….It is NONE OF MY BUSINESS……..Maybe these old boys need to quit gossiping over the fence and get a life of their own…….Telling a woman that her violent rape is NOT something to worry about in terms of pregnancy or abortion is the business of sick and deranged people…………There might be a medication for that—can we pass a law to force them to take it?????

  21. normajean says:

Can someone explain the difference between forcible rape & rape? These idiots feel that if they spew ”you can’t get pregnant when raped” BS, they don’t even address the psychological damage that results from rape.

  22. aislander says:

I suppose the rape committed by Brock Adams–former Democrat senator from this great state, and Secretary of Transformation in the execrable Carter admin–could be construed as not being “forcible.”

He first drugged Kari Tupper before raping her.

If the rape had been forcible, Tupper would have had a fighting chance against the wimpish and cowardly Adams…

  23. aislander says:

Should have read “Transportation,” but “transformation” could describe what DIDN’T happen to Democrats with regard to predatory Dem pols.

After all, Bill Clinton was elected to the presidency soon thereafter.

It seems that Dems can drown ‘em, drug ‘em, rape ‘em, harass ‘em and do whatever else they want to ‘em, and the sheep-like Dem electorate and hypocritical feminists just keep on supporting ‘em.

  24. took14theteam says:

    Spot on aislander.

But it is okay, because they are “progressive”.

  25. Fchrist – the fact that Akin’s comment is total false is insignificant in light of the fact that he, Ryan, and a large chunch of the GOP leadership BELIEVE it to be true.

    Nomajean,
Rape is the carnal knowledge of a person without that persons consent.

Forcible rape is rape committed by force or the threat of force.

  26. tellnolies says:

Of course Guttmacher didn’t endorse Mecklenburg, neither would their analysis which is totally unrelated to those sorts of claims.
No wonder I couldn’t find a link, there isn’t one. Only the easily deluded would think that the analysis supports the ridiculous assertions made by Akin. Apples and Oranges…it wasn’t a study of rape victims, but of an entirely different population.

It’s no wonder Republicans don’t like science, you’re terrible at it

I’m sure you’ve heard of the macague that’s loose in Tampa? You know, the monkey that flings poo when it’s upset? Perfect mascot for the GOP convention, uses the same tactics.

  27. tellnolies says:

…and thanks for proving my point (about monkeys & tactics) at 8:46, and 8:51

    too funny

  28. “the rape committed by Brock Adams”

Nice use of the “But gee, dad. All the other kids are doing it” excuse.

  29. The left dreams of this issue driving women to the dems!

Smart women see through the rhetoric. Do they want a strong economy? Do they want the govt out of their lives? Do they want to associate with Fluke, Chief Warren, or Pelosi? Nevermind leftist heroes like JFK (his intern had cute memories) or Ted. Bill Clinton? Yes, both sides have their past issues, but the left is full of hate and rhetoric. They try and drive votes with fear, not ideas.

  30. And conservative women will and have voted R. 51% of Americans are right to life. The pro death party is just turning off independents.

  31. aislander says:

Geez, tellno: lighten up! I admitted that I erred in posting–as I heard originally–that Guttmacher did the “study” when it was actually Mecklenburg. The Guttmacher survey HAS been used by third parties to support Mecklenburg, so there is a tangential but not direct relationship between them.

I was not endorsing the Mecklenburg study OR interpretations of Guttmacher’s survey, but trying to fill in the history.

normajean asked when a rape is NOT forcible and the Adams rape of Tupper immediately sprang to mind.

Clinton’s rape of Juanita Broaddrick WAS forcible, however…

  32. SandHills says:

    CT8,

Pro choice vs Right to life issue is one, that men should just leave as a personal concience choice of the women involved. I mean, until men get morning sickness, and experience child birth and everything in between, how are we in any positon to force any legislation on women’s conscience regarding something we’ll never experience.

And that is when the choice involves conception that is not even a result of rape.

Rape pretty much makes it an open and closed case – anyone, especially men, who want to make that decision for women based upon dubious science, or religion, or legalese definition about the type of rape….well all I can say is turn that type of governent oversight and control in another direction…..say, gun control.

Given the “touch the third rail” you get from the IRA about gun control….at least try and understand how women feel about Akins statements, and how disingenuous Ryan seems backpeddling from his previous attempt tp pass legislation with Akin. Cant’ win the WH backpeddling….

  33. alindasue says:

CT8 said, “51% of Americans are right to life.”

For the record, I am very much pro-life. I still want to know which bathroom wall Todd Akin has been studying biology and sex ed off of.

  34. Capybara91 says:

Yes. I find these “kernels” in my waste every time I eat corn.

  35. tellnolies says:

“Guttmacher survey HAS been used by third parties to support Mecklenburg, so there is a tangential but not direct relationship between them.”

The connection was made for ideologicial purposes, and is not scientific. It is important to be accurate, some can be swayed by erroneous arguments presented by intelligent people with an agenda.

Thanks for admitting the error. I apologize for flinging some poo of my own with my remarks about the convention.

  36. LeePHill says:

“51% of Americans are right to life.”

    From the CTass Research Polls

  37. How is it that all you Rand disciples conveniently ignore her teachings on the evils of governmental control over a woman’s body?

  38. If Akin were an isolated case, the GOP wouldn’t be losing as much sleep over this….

    a few more examples:
    * A state legislator in Georgia wants to change the legal term for victims of rape, stalking, and domestic violence to “accuser.” But victims of other less gendered crimes, like burglary, would remain “victims.”
    * In South Dakota, Republicans proposed a bill that could make it legal to murder a doctor who provides abortion care. (I know this sounds crazy, but it’s reality).
    * Republicans have a bill in congress that would let hospitals allow a woman to die rather than perform an abortion necessary to save her life.
    * Maryland Republicans ended all county money for a low-income kids’ preschool program. Why? No need, they said: Women should really be home with the kids, not out working.
    * Republicans are pushing to eliminate all funds for the only federal family planning program. That is, for humans. Republican Dan Burton, however, has a bill to provide contraception for wild horses. (You can’t make this stuff up).
    [....]
Paul Ryan, worse yet, cosponsored a bill (H.R. 212) with Rep. Akin called the Sanctity of Human Life Act of 2009, which declares that a fertilized egg is entitled to the same legal rights as a human being.

    http://www.examiner.com/article/war-on-women-and-the-self-destruction-of-the-gop

  39. Frankenchrist says:

The GOP is running scared. Romney is a flawed Milquetoast candidate. GOP will hold the House but not take over the Senate. Obama will eke out a win in November.

  40. Frankenchrist says:

Abortion is legal. Has been since 1973 and will remain legal forever. If the repukes ever attempt to impose their theocratic agenda (i.e. the Human Life Amendment) on the United States they will cease to exist as a national political party.

Abortion will get easier at technology improves. In a few years home abortion kits will be available for purchase over the counter. As abortion becomes even more common it will disappear from the pubic debate. That’s a wonderful thing.

  41. menopaws says:

The AMERICAN TALIBAN, aka, the Republican Party just needs to justify their attempts to control women. CT8 and company can talk economy all they want, but telling women that there is a qualifier to rape is just disgusting…….Abortion. as Frankenschrist said, is legal and will remain legal……..Attempts to control women’s bodies and health care decisions belong in Afghanistan—not here…….So, I suggest these gentleman (and I do use that term loosely) hitch a ride over to Kabul………Abortion should always be the last resort and I believe that most women feel the same way. But, when you have been raped by your Uncle or Step-Dad, or boyfriend or family friend—you should NOT have to debate the merits of your choices with anyone but your own physician………So, climb down off that fake cross you are using to bully women and scurry away….Faith used to intimidate is tyranny……Pure and simple.

  42. MyBandito says:

    Bravo!

  43. normajean says:

    @Menopause: Beautifully said. Thank you

  44. aislander says:

I’m a little stunned that women seem to have more anger toward someone who said something stupid about rape than they have toward those who actually committed the act!

  45. aislander – pretty sleazy to bring up an alleged rape that was later recanted by the accuser to the FBI and then contradicted by the accuser on national television.

  46. aislander says:

Gee, beers, I didn’t mention anyone specifically, but it IS telling that your mind jumps immediately to the former Abuser in Chief…

  47. aislander says:

I know that Broaddrick vacillated somewhat (which was not atypical for the times and circumstances), although she is now adamant that she was raped by Clinton, but I am having trouble finding the television interview in which you say she contradicted herself.

    Please provide a link.

  48. aislander – really?

    “I didn’t mention anyone specifically,”

but if we scroll up the page to 10:41 this jumps out
    “Clinton’s rape of Juanita Broaddrick….”

Not just sleazy, but sloppy. Did you really forget what you had posted 8 minutes before that post?

And….your attempt to Deflect this by pointing to individual Democrats who have been accused of rape is just sleazy.

And….your attempt to claim that women are more angry about Akin’s RECENT idiot comments and alleged rapes that occurred in the previous century is just sleazy.

  49. In November 1998, Broaddrick contradicted her sworn statement in an interview with Dateline NBC.

Archive.org record from February 2006, of Capitol Hill Blue’s original record; Full Transcript of NBC Dateline report on Juanita Broaddrick; February 1999.

  50. aislander says:

You’re talking about the sworn statement re the Paula Jones civil suit? And couldn’t you have just posted the link?

  51. aislander says:

And I mentioned more than ONE rape committed by Dem pols…

  52. LeePHill says:

aislander turns this into a “partisan rape” issue in a sad attempt to defend the indefensible statement made a few days ago.

If the victim were a Democrat, I’m certain she would have “deserved it for being slutty”.

  53. BigSwingingRichard says:

If making one really stupid comment disqualifies someone from holding office, then Biden would not be our VP (a three letter word, JOBS, Romney is going to put you’all back in chains), Obama would not be President, “the private section is doing OK, if you have a successful business, you didn’t build that”…..

  54. averageJose says:

It seems that Dems can drown ‘em, drug ‘em, rape ‘em, harass ‘em and do whatever else they want to ‘em, and the sheep-like Dem electorate and hypocritical feminists just keep on supporting ‘em.

    No kidding.

  55. Frankenchrist says:

    BSR,

Akin’s utterance wasn’t a slip of the tongue. He spoke what he truly and deeply believes.

  56. menopaws says:

averageJose—-I don’t care what party you belong to……..That may be one of the DUMBEST posts I have ever seen on this blog. The issue is violence against women……….So, you want to dance some partisan dance—go look at the REPUBLICAN PLATFORM……..If the woman’s life is in danger, she must die before the fetus………Nothing like having the government in charge of the delivery room is there????This hypocritical feminist has no desire to let Paul Ryan, Mitt Romney make healthcare decisions for me or my daughter……..Your wonderful candidates want to be in charge of my uterus, my Dr. and my life……thanks, but no thanks……..Your form of harassment is pure tyranny……..American Taliban alive and well in Tampa next week……

  57. averagejose – misogynist you are, keep your violent fantasies to yourself.
The GOP obsession with violating women harkens back to Nazi experiments. Sadly, I am not surprised. Entrepreneurial forward-looking positive enthusiasm for America has vanished entirely from the GOP. What we have left is a bunch of old white guys – bitter and angry with the world and ready to do damage and inflict hurt and suffering wherever they can while hanging on to their government healthcare, salary and pension and frantically trying to make the next election. Pathetic.
    http://www.stltoday.com/news/local/metro/akin-appears-to-have-picked-up-conclusions-from-article-now/article_f267f02f-c9eb-515d-9a42-201de9b92d64.html

  58. rape is, by definition, forcing someone to have sex with you without consent.

So this parsing of “forcible” rape v. “unforced”? rape is bizarre – whether the force is drugging someone, coercing them, etc.

  59. since aislander and his cheerleader want to turn this into a partisan thing (D.O.C.!)

Slither back under your rocks, Game, set, match. aislander and averagejose—-we are NOT talking partisan stuff……we are talking PEDOPHILES, RAPISTS…….You cannot compete with that list–unless you get off your butts and try to do the research………….So far, we have a sick, twisted political group, aka the AMERICAN TALIBAN, who believes it is their business to control what women do with their bodies…………..Do not once again send another moron to talk about Democrats being hypocrites regarding violence against women…..Bad, good, whatever—they don’t plan to MAKE IT LAW…….Do you understand that difference???? Making it the law is a step into that Nazi place you all love to accuse Obama of………When do we women get those prison camps for getting birth control or reporting rape?..This is sick stuff and I hope each and every one of you realizes that this kind of control over anyones body is where the Democracy train ceases to exist because it has been pushed off the tracks by zealots………….Quit defending the indefensible…..or recognize how much trouble this country is in…….

  64. aislander says:

meno: the country isn’t “in trouble” because of some fabricated “war on women” (smart women are conservatives, anyway). but due to the failed–or nonexistent–economic policies of the Bamster…

  65. Meno, do you believe in defending those that cannot defend themselves? And are you for or against the death penalty? Just curious.

  66. aislander says:

    Oh, and meno: paranoid much?

  67. averageJose says:

    I never read meno.

  68. LeePHill says:

    BS

  69. They are…. always ….good for a…. laugh…………

  70. aislander says:

Was that past tense or present, aJ?

  71. aislander says:

Never mind. meno is tense ALL the time…

  72. bobcat1a says:

When Ann Coulter calls a teapublican “swine” and Sean Hannity just grins, you know a line has been crossed. Akin is the first troglodyte Coulter has found objectionable.

  73. bobcat1a says:

So aislander, (“smart women are conservatives, anyway”) you suggest that there aren’t really very many smart women? That’s a loser.

  74. aislander says:

Wisdom comes with age, bobcat1a, and the majority of married (that is, older and more desirable) women ARE conservative…

  75. I didn’t intend to make this partisan….

When you start a post with such an obvious “mistruth” it really makes it hard to believe anything that follows.

  76. What you intended to do was to deflect the damage done by Akin’s idiocy (what is truly appalling is that this nonsense-spouter is on the House Committee for Science, Space and Technology) by the classic Counteraccuse strategy.

That, of course, followed your rather lame attempt at the Obfuscation/Godwin Infraction strategy of attempting to connect Planned Parenthood with the Nazis.

You are – in a very partisan faction – trying to get disrupt the thread into defense of Democrats’ past behavior rather than a discuss current events involving Republicans.

  77. Last sentence is very odd……I should read/edit before clicking “Submit Comment”.

  78. menopaws says:

averagejose–do you know how to read without moving your lips?
aislander—only conservative women are smart? Hillary Clinton versus Sarah Palin—-guess who gets humiliated in that match-up? Ms. Palin gives big hair a good name and smart women a source of amusement.CT8–Notice you and all of the above can’t seem to come up with any justification for this letter or Mr. Ryan’s beliefs……Usual insults……..
Those of you who are male should be ashamed of yourselves……….aislander, see you at the prison camp………The equality of women is NOT on the political auction block……..Wait and see what happens…..Men who respect women vote too…..

  79. averageJose says:

What you intended to do was… there you go with the mind reading again.

    Kooky.

  80. aislander says:

I intended, beerBoy, to point out the idiocy of equating fatuous words to malevolent actions…

  81. LeePHill says:

    idiocy of equating fatuous words

“the majority of married (that is, older and more desirable) women ARE conservative… ”

One comment defines the other. Same source for both

fatuous  Example Sentences Origin fat·u·ous   /ˈfætʃuəs/ Show Spelled[fach-oo-uhs] Show IPA
    adjective
    1. foolish or inane, especially in an unconscious, complacent manner; silly.
    2. unreal; illusory.

  82. “white men with bad haircuts and expensive suits”…gee I wonder who posted this phrase. Anybody want to venture a guess. You cling to this stereotype like moss clings to rocks, menopaws. Get help.

  83. aislander – passing legislation to alter reproductive rights – even in the case of rape – isn’t action?

  84. Meno, I asked you a question and you just went on another rant.

And I do not have to justify someone’s beliefs. People have a right to believe whatever they want.

But, pro-LIFE is not a fringe belief. Less popular than the past, yes.

  85. MyBandito says:

“I see aislander struck a few nerves.”

Isn’t that his intent? Why else use such provocative rhetoric?

“I sure hope there’s more to bB’s life than this…”

    Look whose talking.

  86. averageJose says:

I don’t pretend to know people’s intent… like some of the posters here.

    Yea, look whose talking.

  87. aislander says:

I see my post about Ted Kennedy’s drowning of Mary Jo Kopechne and his subsequent denials of an affair got yanked. Oh, and Senator Brock Adams drugging and rape of Kari Tupper, too.

I thought the Trib covered those events…

  88. MyBandito – aJ likes to quote back things that I have written in an attempt to demonstrate that I am a hypocrite. While aislander’s grand crusade is to try to demonstrate the evil of the Progressive Movement of the early 20th century, aJ seems to have set his sights on me. He is a pesky fly – rarely does he bite, as he really doesn’t have the teeth – but annoying all the same.

  89. aislander says:

Well, beerBoy, since many erstwhile liberals are now claiming the mantle of “progressive,” it makes sense to tar that word so that it becomes as disreputable as it once was in this country, and as it deserves to be again.

Progressives became “liberals” around the time of FDR’s first presidency and stayed that way until THAT word became an albatross in the ’60s. Then they pretended to be conservatives. Remember, Carter ran as the more conservative candidate against Ford, as did Clinton against Bush 41. The last Dem presidential candidate who ran as a liberal was Mondale. He lost big.

Anyway, I usually call ALL you guys “lefties” and laugh at your attempts to differentiate yourself from each other on the basis of ideology. Counting angels on pinheads…

  90. MyBandito says:

He does like to pick at nits. I have a sister like that.

  91. took14theteam says:

    So does beerBoy….

    ;-)

  92. averageJose says:

attempt to demonstrate… lol, you do fine all by yourself.

  93. So…is take14 attempting to imitate aJ’s obsession or just forgetting the attempt to wear different socks when he goes out?

  94. averageJose says:

LOL, bB is expanding his obsession to took14.

  95. “bB is expanding his obsession to took14.”

I see someone needs to look up “projection.” LOL

  96. aJ’s arsenal is pretty much centered on the internet cut and paste variation of “I’m rubber and you are glue”.

He makes me feel young, like I’m being followed by a 3rd grader at recess.

  97. MyBandito says:

He’s accomplished his goal when the attention turn to him. It’s best to simply ignore him.

  98. I find it interesting that aislander is attempting to ridicule any attempt of those whose varied beliefs fall generally under the category of “Left” to point out that we are not all the same when he has a very narrow definition of “conservative” that matches his beliefs exactly – anyone who doesn’t fit that definition is seen as a fraud or an apostate.

That’s the problem with trying to enforce black and white definitions – it turns the “big tent” into a backpacking bivouac suitable for only one.

But to insist upon a narrow definition for “your” ideology while imposing a blanket generalization that one can then lampoon based upon the fringe elements on the “other” ideology is just partisan posturing – intellect with no intellectual rigor or curiosity.

  99. averageJose says:

Your juvenile attempts to belittle me are mildly entertaining.

  100. averageJose says:

Oh, btw… bB (as usual) engaged me first with his ad-hominem attack. at least he is consistent with his hypocrtical m.o.

  101. aislander says:

I wouldn’t lump all lefties together, beerBoy, except for three factors:

    many lefties on this forum insist on making distinctions that bear no REAL differences, averring, for example that an ideology cannot be “socialistic” if it doesn’t AVOWEDLY conform to the dictionary definition of socialism;

    no lefty will define a destination-point for his “movement” (that word itself implying continual and unending “progress”);

and many lefties equate the conservatives of, say, Islam with the conservatives of Locke, Burke, Jefferson, and Madison.

And that’s not even considering that lefties identify Nazism and fascism as “conservative” when we all KNOW–but you guys will never admit–they were revolutionary movements leading to authoritarian regimes. And once they are identified as somehow “conservative,” why that makes them JUST the same as American-style conservatism.

C’mon, beerBoy: let the scales fall from your eyes–unless they serve some purpose…

  102. aislander says:

In short, beers, the differences between various styles of lefties boil down to means, methods, and velocity rather than goals…

  103. You keep picking the same fight with the same discredited guilt by association, cherry picked connections made by Goldberg.

If, “we all know” (3rd Person Effect) that fascism is from the Left – why was the Lincoln Brigade manned by the Left and why were Leftist, democratically elected leaders overthrown by Fascist juntas supported by the CIA with the enthusiastic cheerleading of various Corporate interests?

  104. aislander says:

beers…I’m disappointed in you. You didn’t read what I wrote.

I didn’t say that Nazism and fascism is of the left–that is another discussion–I said they were revolutionary movements that devolved into authoritarian regimes, which everyone SHOULD know.

My point is that there is NO relationship between American conservatism and those revolutionary ideologies, which point would not be necessary to make but for the insistence by some lefties that such a relationship exists…

  105. Not sure what American conservatism is.

I think I have a handle on what you define it as. But there are a whole lot of folks who align themselves with the Right who don’t fit into your definition of conservatism.

Your continued project to tar the Left with fascism ignores the reality that fascism is opposed both to Internationalist Marxism (Communism) AND Internationalist Liberalism (Capitalism) and sees itself as a Nationalist alternative to each.

  106. And – you ignore the fascist tendency towards a nostalgia for a glorious past that only exists in their ideological delusions of race memory.

  107. aislander says:

It all becomes very simple when you get to choose the vocabulary, huh beers?

I already stated that I wasn’t talking about the left-right dichotomy right now.

    Let’s go step by step.

WAS Nazism a revolutionary movement before it became an authoritarian regime? I remember hearing something about a Beer Hall Putsch…

How about Italian Fascism? Were the Squadristi organized to maintain social order or to overthrow the existing order (granted, they were contesting with the communists to be the last man standing)?

  108. aislander says:

I have no doubt that both Hitler and Mussolini used their respective revolutionary movements as vehicles to attain PERSONAL power and that attributing ideology to the governments that existed after power was seized is pointless. Those governments did what the dictators wanted done.

So, the only way of looking at Nazism and fascism as ideologies is to view them before they became governments, and you are correct that Mussolini promoted Fascism (capital L with respect to the Italian version) as a “third way” between international socialism (communism) and capitalism. That’s a phrase I have heard used by various Dems in recent years, by the way.

In any case, nationalism was espoused by Mussolini as a practical means of “selling” his nostrums to the populace. The debate then becomes whether those nostrums were more socialistic than capitalistic, but that is not the current discussion. We DO know they were not democratic.

Hitler is a more complicated case, with his notions of racial superiority, German romanticism, and animism all tied up in what really was not a coherent ideology. He shared that last drawback with Karl Marx, in my opinion.

A will to power, dependence on a general will to believe, and a call to action were the commonalities between the two. Action was far more important than ideology, in fact.

  109. aislander says:

Wow–was THAT ever a Freudian typo! When I said that Italian Fascism took the capital “L,” I must have been thinking of liberalism.

    Natural mistake.

  110. WAS Nazism a revolutionary movement before it became an authoritarian regime?

Was the Gingrich Revolution a revolutionary movement before it….

OK, that was a bit flippant. But you get my point.

Though I am not a historian with an emphasis upon the transition from Weimar to Nazi, I think that the authoritarian strain of Nazism – which built upon the Freikorps – was present from the beginning.

ALL political ideologies – with the exception of Anarchism – have a potential towards totalitarianism if taken to the extreme. To suggest that that strain doesn’t exist in conservatism is idealistically naive.

  111. MyBandito says:

Yet that naivete (or arrogance) would be consistent with pre-WWII Nazi Germany, that their ideology was flawless, even if taken to the extreme.

  112. LeePHill says:

Does it take a rocket scientist to figure out that “took14″ and “AJ” are one and the same?

  113. I’m not a rocket scientist….just a dance and theatre artist/educator.

  114. MyBandito says:

A kernel of truth, considering how many kernels are on a cob, means the there’s a whole bunch untrue about Akin’s outrageous comment, if only one kernel was true.

  115. took14theteam says:

Apparently PeeHill is not a “Rocket Scientist”

    I thought I was Sondra K? You know, Forward K A R D N O S.

    Keep living the dream.

Like beerBoy suggested, I have “moved” on from worrying about “who is whom”. You should try that.
