COUNTY: Call a halt to Orton Junction plan

Pierce County should immediately drop its support of the disastrous Orton Junction project. This project would expand the urban growth area of Sumner into rural farmland.

Orton Junction is an illegal proposed development of commercial and residential properties in the Puyallup Valley to the south of state Route 410. The project would permanently destroy 182 acres of prime farmland in the Puyallup Valley.

The state’s Growth Management Hearings Board has decided that Sumner has failed to demonstrate why prime farmland should be destroyed for the Orton Junction project (TNT, 8-8). Sumner also lacks the population for commercial and residential expansion.

We don’t need more retail space at the expense of farmland. Vacant commercial land is available in the vicinity. The state is about to order Pierce County to reverse its position on Orton Junction or risk losing valuable transportation dollars.

The Orton Junction fiasco is about to cost the taxpayers serious financial losses. Pierce County should disapprove Sumner’s Orton Junction project at once.
