The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (aka Mormons) does utilize the Boy Scouts for it’s youth activities program for boys. However, there are many many other boy scout troops outside of the church as well. Any “head guys in different divisions earning triple digit incomes” are not affiliated with the church at all. The church has no paid clergy or officers.

By the way, the do still go camping, although camping has never been the Boy Scouts’ only focus… even back during the 50s when my grandpa (an atheist) led a troop.

Let’s face it. The Scouts of today is very different than the Scouts during the 60’s and 70’s and up into the 80‘s. The religious fundies and more specifically the Mormen church has hijacked a perfectly good organization. It’s a business now with the head guys in the different divisions earning triple digit incomes. It’s an institution used to indoctrinate young boys into the church. Camping…….not so much. No wonder they have lost so many members.

It’s not separate but equal; it’s just separate. The Boy Scouts are a private organization. You don’t have a right to be in it, and they have every right to exclude whomever they want to. Are girls second-class citizens because they are not allowed to be Boy Scouts?

If I create a church and say that everyone but people with the letter “x” in their screen name can join and go to my version of heaven, does that make you a second-class citizen? No, of course not.

Because somne of us have an aversion to second-class citizenship and the concept of separate but equal.
