BOY SCOUTS: Group’s policy on gays correct

Letter by Gerald R. Wheeler, Orting on July 19, 2012 at 4:39 pm with 7 Comments »

Regarding the Boy Scouts of America’s policy of excluding homosexuals from leadership in the boy scouts, I think there are good reasons for this policy.

Historically, several thousands of boys were sexually abused in the scouts. Parents want their children protected from sexual assault, and the prohibition helps prevent the participation of men who would take advantage of trusting young boys.

Also, the Boy Scouts have paid out tens of millions of dollars to boys who have been abused and now have to pay enormous amounts for litigation insurance premiums. No one has stepped up to cover this cost.

And lastly, it is a moral issue. Seventy percent of scout troops are sponsored by religious institutions, the majority of which teach that nonmarital sexual intimacy is immoral. There is a moral foundation to the Boy Scouts of America, and they believe that homosexual conduct is inconsistent with the Scout Oath and the Scout Law to be morally straight and clean in thought, word and deed.

The final line of the Scout Law is an affirmation of a Scout’s obligation to be “reverent.” The leadership of the Boy Scouts of America has affirmed its commitment to revere God and protect boys over the demands of the secular elite and homosexual activists. May God bless them for it.

  1. sandblower says:

So, Mr. Wheeler, do you have a source for your claim that thousands of boys in the Scouts were sexually abused? After you provide us with that you might write something about what we should do with the Catholic Church whose priests have sexually abused a lot of boys. Please address the moral issues in that situation too. We can hardly wait!

  2. Almost all pedophiles are straight, often married, men – just the type the BSA wants as leaders.

Those pedophiles who became pack masters did so in order to get closer to their pray.

  3. charliebucket says:

Besides the other fallacies, is this letter REALLY asserting that only gay men have nonmarital sex??

    LOL x 1,000,000!

  4. surething says:

    Stunningly ignorant letter.

  5. frankiethomas says:

Does the TNT have NO standards on the letters it publishes? Really? Anyone with the slightest it of intelligence knows that pedophilia does not equate to homosexuality. To publish this letter ratifies the opinion of the ignorant. GAWD.

  6. normajean says:

The letter certainly sparks controversy and of course more readers. I am no longer surprised by the number of people that have succumbed to the spewing of ignorant jabber for all to read.

  7. As a straight, white, Christian male, it appears Gerald Wheeler would be the greatest threat to Boy Scouts, statistically anyways. But let’s not use facts if we can demonize instead, right, Gerald?
