ELECTION: Sonntag errs in endorsing Kelley

Letter by Darrel D. Shiley Jr., Lakewood on July 13, 2012 at 12:06 pm with 6 Comments »

Brian Sonntag was a great auditor, and I voted for him several times. But I can’t believe he is endorsing Troy Kelley to replace him.

Kelley’s voting record shows he is a partisan player who cares not what the people who put him into office want or need. He answers only to the lobbyists and party leaders.

I have e-mailed his office many times and never received a single response, not even a form letter. Kelley never represented the people of the 28th District during his time in Olympia, and he won’t represent the people of Washington.

I live in Rep. Kelley’s district and he has always responded to every letter I’ve written him. I’ve always found him to be fair and reasonable, even when we disagreed on issues. I wonder if the author of this letter has other intentions beyond trying to provide facts.

  2. I too live in Kelley’s district and have had several meetings with him and three or four conversations on the phone. He doorbelled our neighborhood on several occastions. He was always willing to talk and called me back if he wasn’t available when I called.

He and I share a fairly conservative business philosophy, especially about the importance of small businesses to our communities. His issues going into office were centered on education, family concerns and other issues that impact young, growing families.

Mine were more directed toward social issues, people with disabilities, economic fairness, eliminating policies that unfairly impact the poor and minorities, and making sure all laws in Washington, including marriage laws, respect equal protection under the law.

On the social issues, he was not convinced sometimes, and not eager to champion such an approach, but was willing to listen and changed his mind about a few things.

If you look at his votes, he voted against some pretty popular things that Democrats supported. He voted against liquor tasting in grocery stores, against sexual health education, against limiting the ability of local governments to limit homeless shelters, against reductions in probation times, and many more, all that passed with a Dem majority.

What I like about Kelley is his personal integrity and his willingness to explore and check all facts, and that will make a good auditor.

  3. PumainTacoma says:

I live in Kelly’s district and not once does he call people back or email them back. That is hogwash. Especially if citizens give him proof of a Democratic politician using the legislature and his office to protect and coverup an abuse case with the state. Kelly chose to not answer those emails and instead, to protect the Democrat friend.

It takes courage to do the right thing. If we needed a politician to stand and smile and not speak up, I’d elect my dog.

  4. Pumain, “not once?”. Well, I guess you have some evidence there? Pretty bold statement, since I know it is absolutely false based on my own experience.

You might try giving your opinion without adding in such absolute lies so that it makes what you say totally meaningless and obvious that you have some agenda other than telling the truth.

  5. sandblower says:

I too support Mr. Kelley. There is something wrong with Pumain’s comment as tuddo has already stated.
Pumain, is there any further information you want to share with us or is our conclusion correct?

Agree Kelley is a joke. No email response no calls, no accountability.
