CENTURYLINK: Right and wrong not negotiable

Re: “Lie tied to CenturyLink” (TNT, 7-13).

CenturyLink spokeswoman Meg Andrews is quoted more than once using the phrase “Not in our best interest” in referring to the company’s vendors falsely telling people that competitor Click is closing. What a back-door way of saying “We’d keep it up but it may now cost us business.”

Why doesn’t she say, “This conduct is both morally and legally wrong. We do not allow our vendors to act this way, and I have told them that they have two choices: Stop lying to consumers or find another job”?

I find it pathetic, to be honest, when Andrews says, “We’ve been working with the vendor” as if they have to negotiate what is right and wrong. It is just a way of saying that lying and breaking the law is OK unless it costs us money.

It is this type of conduct that damages both businesses – Click because of the lie and CenturyLink because smart consumers will avoid it like the plague unless it takes a moral and legal stand.
