TNT: One’s opinion doesn’t have to be factual

Re: “Letters should be more substantive” (letter, 7-13).

The letter writer is tired of reading (and I paraphrase here) poorly researched, illogical, deceptive and unnecessarily provocative letters to the editor. I share his irritation.

Imagine how annoyed I was Friday morning when I turned to the editorial page and found it dominated by those bigoted, mean-spirited ideologues, known in the world of editorial journalism as Michael Gerson and Charles Krauthammer. Had I not seen the piece by my old favorite, Gene Robinson, on the same page, I also might have written a critical letter to The News Tribune.

But, after some reflection, I realized opinion is just that – opinion – and it doesn’t have to be factual. It is for the reader to separate the wheat from the chaff.

  1. Nice piece of chaff you just wrote, Dave.

Pulling out the bigot line shows you have no rational argument to their points.

  2. charliebucket says:

    well said David.

  3. alindasue says:

What “bigot lines” are you referring too?

  4. Alindasue, read the letter

  5. alindasue says:

I did read it. I’m not seeing any bigot lines. I do see the word “bigot” once, but that is not the same thing.

I feel that Mr. Ogilvie’s description of realizing that it’s okay for columnist to have differing opinions and that it is up to the readers to personally chose which are worth their time to read, to be well written.

As Mr. Ogilvie said, “…opinion is just that – opinion…”
We all have them. Relax and just accept them for what they are.

  6. So, 2 conservative columnists are labeled bigots but a liberal is the saving grace smells right to you? I am sure you are torn with politics today, with aniti-religion leftists calling the religious every name in the book, so let’s be real here.

  7. Scottc51 says:

This name-calling letter with no factual specifics is nothing. Your letter, David, is even less than the opinion chaff you criticize.

  8. SwordofPerseus says:

You right wing partisan cheerleaders crack me up, I picture you in pleated skirts and pompoms shaking in the air with a giant elephant mascot on your sweater!

  9. took14theteam says:

The same thing can be said of you and your left wing partisan cheerleaders, Swordo.

  10. Typical partisan insults from SOP. Zero substance or fact. Sad

  11. CT7,

    What is the difference between:
    a. Righties blasting left wing columnists, and
    b. Lefties blasting right wing columnists?

Fact: the Constituion says both are Free Speech.

    IMO: to righties:

    a is Free Speech, and
    b is Hate Speech.

BTW – SOP’s comment was an opinion and does not have to be factual.

SOP – tmi. About to hit the hay, expecting nightmares now.

  12. It is just great that Mr. Ogilvie has developed his personal wheat/chaff seperator to the extent that it can identify the mean-spititedness and bigotry of Mr. Gerson and Mr. Krauthammer while flewlessly identifying the thought purity of Mr. Robinson. Kudoes to you Mr. Ogilvie.

  13. Oldoc – think you for your opinion.
