Re: “Why does health care issue make us sick?” (Peter Callaghan column, 7-12).

As par for the course, Callaghan’s column features some of the sharpest commentary around. However, I cannot help but quarrel with the implication that Rob McKenna is “inarticulate” and a “flip-flopper” when he says the individual mandate is necessary for now.

Of course the individual mandate is necessary for now. That’s how the system is designed to function. Whether you are for or against the law, have some humility about how it works.

What’s sickening about the issue is when Republicans cry “socialism” and Democrats counter with “one-party rule.”

Unless we have a real discussion about how to reduce health care costs, other arguments do not matter so much. Politically they are fantastic. Maybe that’s the problem. Equality of the game aside, both parties want to buy the election. A little more humility on this would also go a long way.

As for the conclusion that the news has become something to drink over and attending Mariners games are in poor health, brilliant.

Health-care costs have been no more than a chip in the political game going all the way back to Medicare. No one has wanted to solve the problem: they’d rather have the issue.

Anybody with a calculator and actuarial and demographic tables can assess the problem and determine the amount of money required to cover those who cannot pay their own way…

The problem is not those who cannot pay their own way. If they need help, we should help them. The problem is those who CAN pay their own way and won’t.

  3. Ouch, ouch, ouch! As much as it pains me I have to agree the Health Care is one of those issues that are such good issues neither side really wants to solve it.
