Re: “For Democrats, this not-so-little pony is a rallying point” (Kathleen Parker column, 6-24).
Parker goes after Lawrence O’Donnell, a pro-Democrat journalist who commented on Ann Romney’s owning a horse, a symbol of wealth. Parker says Democrats envy “the rich … the lucky ones” and resent them as “the One Percenters.”
To her this resentment drives what she sees as the Democrats’ “war on success,” part of the ideological nonsense from the left” (she is quick with slogan-leadened phrases).
Because Parker frames everything in terms of schoolyard individualism, she misses the real issue behind Mrs. Romney’s horse: the growing and destructive social gap between rich and poor. We need to get our focus back on the bigger picture: the common good, a level playing field economically, and socially and fairness for all.
President Obama stands tall for these three great American values. We need four more years of his leadership to more firmly secure these three values – not mere gain for some individuals but society-wide sharing of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
