FOOD STAMPS: Users must take responsibility

Re: “Limits make poor feel poorer” (letter, 6-27).

I’m not one who wants people to suffer, but ensuring that food stamps, provided by the people, are used for good nutrition is no more wrong than ensuring that a live-in boyfriend isn’t feeding off the public trough instead of providing for the children he helps produce.

There is a responsibility in accepting help from the government. It is not an entitlement; it is not earned like the Social Security we pay into every working day.

Those accepting help must make an effort to train themselves for employment paying a living wage. That includes the responsibility of government to provide for support and child care while they are in training. This is the best approach to the problem of people, mainly women, who have children they cannot support.

We need to all quit whining.

If women cannot or will not identify fathers, then no benefits. One of the main problems is that assistance is just enough so that work is not necessary. Hungry people will find work.

(perhaps) Providing childcare would be a better way to help women? They would, of course, need A JOB to qualify for that sort of thing.

In that case, DNA sampling may be a requirement and automatic garnishment of income from the fathers is warranted. If the father refuses to get a job, maybe automatic castration is needed.
