METRO PARKS: Let group run Titlow Pool

Re: “Titlow Pool fills a need, group says” (TNT, 6-23).

Why is the Metro Parks Board so opposed to keeping Titlow Pool open? This is a pool that has served the Tacoma community and the overall competitive swim community for decades.

I guess it should not be a surprise since the board reneged on its bond issue promise to improve the pool years ago and only put in the new fun pool at Kandle Park after much public outcry and negotiation.

What boggles my mind is why the board will not even entertain a proposal by a community group with enough money and experience to operate and maintain the pool. The Titlow Alliance Group has gather financial commitments from a dozen aquatics organizations for practice rental and competitive events. This would pay for the cost of running and maintaining the pool for summer use – the same way it has been for almost 60 years.

There is no money to remove the pool – that has been fixed to solve the runoff issues – and it will sit there, next to the $2 million spray park the park district is installing (I wonder what runoff issues that will have) as an empty eyesore and a reminder that politics so often trumps community interest.

I wonder what the park board sees as the public benefit to letting Titlow crumble? Let’s ask.
