RELIGION: Church trying to impose its beliefs

Re: “No one has to work for church” (letter, 6-22).

There is one huge flaw in the letter writer’s passionate but erroneous defense of the Roman Catholic Church’s so-called right to freedom of religion. He fails to acknowledge that we all have that right.

No one says that Catholics who don’t believe in birth control have to use it. However, that same right to religious freedom prevents the church from forcing its beliefs about birth control on others. It is also barred by law from discriminating against Americans who do not share their religious beliefs. That includes denying them the right to full medical coverage.

If they can’t deal with equal rights for all, they are free to leave the country at any time.

The church isn’t trying to prevent people from obtaining birth control, they just said that they don’t to have to pay for it under their health care plans for employees. The employees can go buy their own you know.

  2. The Catholic Church has every right to practice their religion as long as they obey the laws of the land. Every country has their own set of laws. The Catholic Church is world wide. So, whatever country they are in they must obey that country’s laws.

If the law requires that an employer must provide medical care for their employees that includes contraceptive care, than they should be required to obey the law. All they can legally do is insist that their members not participate.

If every religion picked and chose what laws their religion allowed them to obey we would have chaos.

  3. CrazyJim says:

Bandito has it right! If a church runs a company like Coke, a hospital, a car dealership or whatever they are under the same rules as their competition. Just because you are a church owner doesn’t give you special dispensation to operate under a different set of rules. The Catholic Church makes a lot of money running these hospitals and other businesses and in most cases with lots of taxpayer money.

They want to be the tail that wags the dog. I’m pretty sick of their victim mentality and plea to get to be different just because they have the word “Catholic” attached to their business.

  4. really? none of you understand that the the law SPECIFICALLY exempts churches from the law. its things like hospitals, charities and universities that won’t be allowed to discriminate against women’s health.

and by the way. churches ARE NOT exempt from any laws, we’ve chosen to give them exemptions to taxes and such. what the constitution says is that the church must obey any law that was not specifically designed to oppress the church.

for instance, the church cannot perform human-sacrifice just because they “believe” its ok since the bible said so. murder is a law that has nothing to do with the church. just like women’s health has nothing to do with the church.

  5. menopaws says:

The Church has been bullying people and hiding pedophiles for a very long time…….their form of “faith” is sick, is criminal and has little to do with normalcy anymore……So, they can sound their trumpet over religious freedom—those whose children have been harmed by their version of freedom, are free to run away…………sick people with a sick, intimidating agenda…….

  6. Idiots………

  7. I have a silly idea. How about if you don’t like a specific church’s ideals you look for another church and mind your own frickin business?

  8. harleyrider1 says:

I am not one, but I’ll take the Catholic church any day over Islam, Muslims.

Haven’t seen the Catholics attack a Nation, massacre their own, behead living people on film, blow themselves up, blow up children, and treat women like cattle – daily.

Telling Catholics to leave America because they don’t want to be forced by Barack to do something?

Really? One has to leave if they don’t like the King?

  9. menopaws says:

harleyrider1—You don’t know much about the history of Latin America, do you??? Largest property owner for the entire continent used to be the Catholic church–and trust me, their treatment of the peasants working that land was a real eye opener……….Their alliances with multi national corporations were also somewhat questionable………..Lots of dirty business down south…….

  10. LeePHill says:

It is so sad to see conservatives not research issues before commenting

  11. Frankenchrist says:

    Catholics are the real terrorists.

  12. billybushey says:

harleyrider: Check your history, specifically the New World Conquest (also known as the Cross and the Sword), the Crusades and the Inquisition. The Catholic Church;s hands drip with blood.

  13. philichi says:

LeePhill: I have done the research. The Catholic Church has been around about 2000 years. Obama has been around about 3 1/2 years. All of the great commies of the past havn’t brought the Church down. Lenin, Mao, Castro, etc. When it is all said and done, Obama and his silly ideas will be a small foot note in history. Relax.

  14. nwcolorist says:

philichi, your perspective is good. And I might add that the United States has been around 225 years.

If it comes to a showdown, guess who’s the hands down favorite to eventually triumph.

  15. One can only hope that this is a trend that will spread:

A Pennsylvania jury Friday convicted Msgr. William J. Lynn of child endangerment for covering up sexual abuse of children by priests

  16. stopcomplainin – by your credo a Christian Scientist owned business would not have to offer any health care benefits.

  17. PumainTacoma says:

Sandra if you hate Catholics so much then don’t go to any Catholic hospital for medical care. They do abide by their core beliefs at their hospitals too. Your hate for those with religious beliefs doesn’t mean you get what you want from their Catholic paid for hospital too.
