GREGOIRE: Trade mission for lame duck governor?

Re: “Governor leading trade mission”  (TNT, 6-14).

Another gaggle of politicians and briefcase carriers are off on an all-expense-paid boondoggle disguised as a “trade mission,” this time to economically challenged Ireland, Wales and merry olde England, software, apples and airplanes in hand.

Great news for those Washington industries to have our governor do their bidding for them! They’ll undoubtedly  be able to lay off hundreds of their marketing professionals. And, all of this, according to Gregoire’s spokeswoman, at little or no cost to we the people.

Most of the money for this first-class excursion will come from federal grants, which begs the question: Where is that money coming from in light of our massive deficits? Gov. Chris Gregoire only has a few months left of luxurious living at our expense in her (our) Olympia mansion. Could it be that she’s trying to sweeten her résumé to include super saleswoman, or is it just lame duck party time?

She is quickly running out of time to fix all those problems she promised to resolve during her last two election campaigns. So I think that instead of traipsing around broke countries peddling apples on their street corners, her last few days in office should be spent by:

• Knocking on doors of CEOs/businesses to see how the state can help them add employees.

• Knocking on doors of refineries/distributors to see how the state can help them lower gas prices.

• Improving schools.

• Improving transportation.

• Improving crime prevention.

  1. Dear Hal, they are already doing all those things. Do you have any other late ideas?
Where do these people come from?

  2. LeePHill says:

Hal – the last time your kind griped about the Governor’s trip, she brought home the bacon.

Why don’t you quit before you look more ridiculous?

  3. took14theteam says:

    Hi Larry

  4. Yes Hal, I agree with you. And isn’t it convenient that Christine’s trip coincides with the queen’s diamond jubilee and London Olympics beginning soon? Wish I could go.

  5. If it was Dino, you’d be all about it.

  6. averageJoseph says:

I doubt Dino gas much interest in the Queen’s diamond jubilee.

  7. • Knocking on doors of CEOs/businesses to see how the state can help them add employees.

-By buying their products and services, of by knocking on the doors of potential European customers?

    • Knocking on doors of refineries/distributors to see how the state can help them lower gas prices.

-Maria Cantwell is handling that one.

    • Improving schools.

-Proper funding of Public education. Charter schools will only hurt public education.

    • Improving transportation.

-Support public transportation. Get more cars off the roads. Proper funding of road improvements.

    • Improving crime prevention.

-Legalize marijuana for starters, allowing crime fighters to deal with real crimes and reduce unnecessary incarcerations.

More business for Boeing. Unfortunately for the conservatives, they chose to hold the even in July in England. Maybe next time, they’ll call and ask Washington Republicans when it’s OK to hold an even for the Governor to attend and make money for the state.

  9. Boeing’s sales and marketing reps spend years developing sales and leasing accounts. I suspect they would really appreciate if Gregoire stayed out of their business. Maybe she could start her own Amway franchise instead.

  10. LeePHill says:

Leper: They didn’t turn down the business she brought back from France

  11. Lee, Your delusional. I suspect the French contract took years to develop and complete and Gregoire had nothing to do with it. (Other than taking credit that wasn’t deserved.)
