TNT: Dog’s memorial given priority over soldier’s?

Re: “Puyallup officer, colleagues bid farewell to 4-legged partner” (TNT, 6-14).

I like dogs; I have two myself. I also support those who serve in law enforcement. However, I question why editors at The News Tribune chose to place the story of the brave police dog’s memorial on the front page while placing the story of the memorial service for a Joint Base Lewis-McChord officer who truly gave his life for his country on page three.

Something just doesn’t seem right about the priority placed on these two newsworthy events.

I commented earlier today to the editors of the TNT in the same way as Mr.Level. The column about the dog seemed to mock Lt Morgado. Contrast the two pictures displayed. Grown men hugging and weeping over a dog that died in a routine veterinary clinic procedure versus a young boy, neatly dressed and escorted by his Mother at the altar for Lt. Morgado who was killed leading his men in combat. Mention was made of the grieving dog handlers from the Puget Sound area that attended the memorial. No mention was made of the at least two rows of family, not to mention the several rows of young friends, that attended the Lieutenant’s service. Mr. Level, you observation and letter-to-the-editor is appreciated. And thank you to Lt. Morgado for your willingness to serve.

while we are complaining about headlines, may I add that I thought the recent front page, huge article about the death of a megachurch Pastor was odd. I do not even see why this was considered front page ‘news’ at all. It could have been, appropriately, listed on the obit page or on the religion page.

As for the dog story, I also think it was great to recognize him and I am sorry for the loss, but on the front page?? (how about on the front page of the South Sound section?) hmmm…..
