MEDIA: ‘Progressive’ rhetoric demonizes conservatives

Letter by Robert Bennett, Steilacoom on June 13, 2012 at 11:14 am with 74 Comments »
June 13, 2012 12:38 pm

I have recently tuned in to a local “progressive talk” radio station to hear what the left is chattering about. I am not surprised to hear the extreme rhetoric of name-calling, demeaning slander and insults directed to anyone who does not believe as they do, especially to conservatives and Republicans.

One particular syndicated host regularly refers to the “right” as “Republicons,” “conservadamns,” traitors, idiots, morons and even communists. Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker is referred to as “Governor Etch-a-Sketch,” and Gov. Mitch Daniels of Indiana has been called a “stupid idiot.” Another host has accepted the “if not by ballots then by bullets” concept to promote the liberal agenda.

For the time I’ve listened to this station, I have yet to hear anything positive about what the left has to offer. All I hear is hate, fear and demonizing the opposition.

All of the angry rhetoric from the left may be accepted by their faithful, but it does not sit well with a large portion of the public. It’s getting old, and enough is enough.

I can understand about promoting one’s political views in a public forum, but spewing negativity and insults to support your position is counterproductive. If that’s their game plan, then they might be shooting themselves in their own foot.

  1. Shame on that host. He sounds just like Rush Limbo.

  2. averageJoseph says:

Have you ever watched Olberman or some of the other “progressives” on cable? Can’t help but chuckle everytime I here a prog whine and complain about Fox or Rush.

  3. sumyungboi says:

This is why leftist radio is never successful. Even hard core leftists can take only so much hatred before they tune out.

  4. conservativeteacher says:

Do as I say not as I do usually puts an end to most liberals.

  5. tellnolies says:

Turn off ALL talk radio, it’s just ridiculous echo chamber garbage anyway, regardless of the political slant.

  6. Sumy – but the most successful right wing programs are not only the most hate filled they are the least accurate.

Conservativeteacher – do as I tell you, not as I am allowed to do is the basic mantra of the right.

  7. Ortingmom says:

Liberals; They can dish is out but can’t take it.

  8. 1. Who wrote the book on political radio and demonizing? Republicans.

    2. Olberman is not on the air. Take off your blinders.

    3. Was this a liberal that wrote a letter to the editor to whine about hearing something on the media they don’t like?

    4. Calling politicians names is terrible. You need to call a young woman who is testifying before congressional reps a “slut”.

  9. Rather than expecting to hear facts/news on talk radio of any bent, try thinking for yourself. I am proudly liberal and progressive and have seen a lot of nasty, cutesy name calling on this blog about my views, usually by the same folks over and over and over again (hint: repeating verbatim what you are TOLD is not thinking)and I just blow it off, consider the source and remind myself that only mental midgets would regurgitate “talking points” and consider it thoughtful or worthwhile.

  10. conservativeteacher says:

Unemployment is on the rise bespite cooking the books. Inflation is on the rise despite eliminating food and gas from the equation. Obamacare was rulled unconstitutional(based on Obama’s reaction after he was leaked the vote). Obama has only two things to run on that are postitive in his eyes, Don’t ask Don’t tell and the killing of Osama.

  11. concernedtacoma7 says:

Bottom line is leftists do not want to talk about actual news.

What is there to talk about? Middle East a mess due to BHO supported Arab Spring. Economy a mess and the blame game is failing. Afghanistan surge is not as successful as Iraq surge (and God bless the Troop fighting it). Holder can’t stop lying. Clinton calling BHO out on failed rhetoric.

Seriously, besides blaming the right, what can they talk about? Perhaps advances in gay acceptance (not ‘rights’). Still controversial and pushing black voters away (as if the dem plantation is not enough for them to move towards individual responsibility and the right).

  12. “This is why leftist radio is never successful.”

“Leftist” radio doesn’t have high ratings for one simple reason. Most “leftists” are capable of independent thought and don’t need to be told what to think.

  13. concernedtacoma7 says:

I have a comment awaiting moderation without one harsh word or moniker named. What’s going on?

  14. “Promoting one’s political views in a public forum, but spewing negativity and insults to support your position is counterproductive”
Robert Bennett, you are spewing negativity and insults. You nicely prove the point that right wing conservatives cannot think for themselves and prefer to whine, complain and cry. Go back to Limbaugh and Fox (and wipe that foam from your mouth).

  15. sumyungboi says:

scorn: “Rather than expecting to hear facts/news on talk radio of any bent, try thinking for yourself.”

Yes, you’re really above the fray then.

scorn: “I just blow it off, consider the source and remind myself that only mental midgets would regurgitate “talking points” and consider it thoughtful or worthwhile.”

    Oops, guess not! :)

  16. I’m not sure which is more humorous. The denial of the viciousness of right wing pundits or the pretending of the local conservatives on being up on the “real” news.

In the conservative mind, all the networks and cable news outlets are against them and are strictly propaganda, except Fox. Reality, huh?

  17. On the random list of “real” news, why didn’t anyone mention Obama’s birth certificate? Isn’t that still on the top of the pile along with his secret association with the Muslim Brotherhood?

  18. Robert – You have misheard so much your hearing and your brain need to be checked.

    Conservadem (conservative democratic) not conseradams.

“Governor Etch-a-Sketch” referrers to Gov Romney, and said title came from his GOP opponents and non-supporters in the GOP President campaign.

Bullets over Ballots is pure right-wing.

Conserativeteacher – even if your lies were true, Obama would still have something to run on, unlike the Great Mitt flopper who has only his ability to see and support all sides of every issue.

CT7 – what can we blame the right for – how about we stop with they have blocked every meaningful bill (even their own) which might help the country in order to make Obama a one term President.

  19. concernedtacoma7 says:

    Exactly- you can only blame.

  20. sumyungboi says:

niceguy: “I’m not sure which is more humorous. The denial of the viciousness of right wing pundits or the pretending of the local conservatives on being up on the “real” news.”

You forgot to provide the obligatory links to the “Fox News viewers are stupid” college studies.

  21. Frankenchrist says:

Rush Limbaugh paved the way for all talk radio with his vile commentary.

  22. menopaws says:

I never trust anyone who whines and plays the victim……..Get real–both sides sling mud and BOTH sides need to learn some manners……..So, quit squalling and stop listening to all of them………..They lose their audience, they might learn something about civil discourse…….. The reality is that those on the conservative side have said their share of ugly—so , living in glass houses and throwing stones comes to mind here…….Our entire society has DEVOLVED into rudeness, meanness and ignorance……And, appears to be proud of it!!!!!

  23. I just observed “concernedtacoma7″ pull the typical right wing tactic of taking someone’s statement, editing it, and turning it into a completely different meaning:

xring said: “CT7 – what can we blame the right for – how about we stop with they have blocked every meaningful bill (even their own) which might help the country in order to make Obama a one term President”

to which concernedtacoma7 edited and replied: “Exactly- you can only blame.”

xring clearly stated what blame was cast and a logical reason why, based on factual history of what has taken place since January of 2009. Without the entire statement, it is out of context.

Either conservatives like concernedtacoma7 are incapable of digesting an entire conversation or their purposefully attempt to misrepresent what people say. it’s my opinion that the latter is the case.

President Obama has weathered a storm of misquotes due to this practice.

The discourse in America will only grow more adult like when the practice of misquoting stops.

  24. sunyungboi: I don’t know what you are talking about. Maybe you can elaborate on your statement

  25. LeePHill says:

Walker is not referred to as “Governor Etch-a-Sketch”. That is reserved for Mitt Romney and started during the Republican primary.

  26. And the incendiary Glenn Beck? Speaking of fear and hate – This just in from Reuters:

    ——————————-

Glenn Beck inks $100 million radio deal

Glenn Beck has signed a five-year, $100 million syndication contract, extending his popular conservative talk radio program. Glenn Beck left television last year amid dwindling ratings, but his radio show is the third most popular in the US, airing on 400 stations and maintaining a robust, growing following.

  27. charliebucket says:

I didn’t even know there is a progressive radio station, what station?

SO, if there really is: what does that make it? one progressive talk station among what? 10, 20, 30 conservative talk stations? ROTFLMAO

  28. LeePHill says:

It’s said that all media is liberal. Thus all radio stations must be progressive.

  29. concernedtacoma7 says:

Ha! The leftists can not even keep themselves interested enough to make a radio station profitable.

Niceguy- is that not blame/excuse? When do you (leftist) actually hold someone responsible? Before you answer, think of how the left treated/treats Bush (even after the left took congress).

  30. aislander says:

I keep hearing about the “vile Rush Limbaugh,” but, when pressed for specifics, I hear only the same three or four examples of “vile” speech, the oldest some twenty years of age and the most recent the Fluke kerfuffle.

Not bad for someone who’s on the air fifteen hours a week, since 1988…

PS: When Limbaugh referred to Fluke as a “slut,” it was in the context of someone who seemed to require a hell of a lot of free birth control each year. Not justified, but somewhat explainable.

What was the context when Ed Schultz used that word to describe former Supreme Court law clerk Laura Ingraham?

  31. LeePHill says:

There is a progressive station that has been on the air in Seattle for at least 8 years that I know of. Ed Schultz was on mid-day and bumped Dori Monson off the #1 mid-day position several years ago. Monson is with the monster station, KIRO. Monson went to shilling for McCain in 2008 when his ratings fell.

Stephanie Miller is now on Current TV and judging by the number of conservatives that call in, she is making an impact on the viewing audience.

One must have the facts before spouting off tripe.

  32. Schultz called Ingraham a slut. Once. Shultz apologized to her and suspended himself.

Limbaugh calling Fluke a slut went on for about five days. He didn’t apologize to her. He didn’t miss a day of airtime

If anyone thinks that Limbaugh’s only transgression was calling Fluke a slut, they are very limited in knowledge of his on-air history and are particularily ignorant about his attempt with the NFL.

For the life of me, I cannot understand why people defend Rush Limbaugh’s behavior, unless they endorse it.

  33. Charlie Bucket:

LISTEN / LOOK | Mike Malloy Radio Show : Progressive Radio …
    http://www.mikemalloy.com/stations

The Mike Malloy Show is broadcast Monday through Friday from 9-Midnight Eastern Time

  34. aislander says:

NiceGuy: Apparently you are not a FairGuy, since I mentioned there had been several slip-ups that are usually cited. I was looking for something new, or at least different.

As for the NFL contretemps, I would be very interested in hearing YOUR explanation of what happened…

Oh, and Schultz called her that twice: the initial insult and the reiteration of it.

  35. Charlie Bucket, I forgot:

Thom Hartmann – News & info from the #1 progressive radio show
    http://www.thomhartmann.com

Thom Hartmann is the #1 progressive radio talk show host in the US and a New York Times bestselling author.

  36. sumyungboi says:

niceguy: “Limbaugh calling Fluke a slut went on for about five days.”

Absolutely false, unless you want to talk about how long the left wanted to rant about it.

niceguy: “He didn’t apologize to her.”

Absolutely false. You stepped out like a cabbage, homes.

  37. “When Limbaugh referred to Fluke as a “slut,” it was in the context of someone who seemed to require a hell of a lot of free birth control each year. Not justified, but somewhat explainable”

Even for you you a******r that is pathetic.

  38. Robert, I dare you to listen to hate..er I mean, ‘conservative’ radio for a day see what your list of names will be.
Or are you as brain washed as the other cons that post here?

  39. “Ha! The leftists can not even keep themselves interested enough to make a radio station profitable.”

Still 180 degrees out from reality! How do you do it ct7?

  40. concernedtacoma7 says:

Klu- I dare you to listen for a day and actually think about the points they are making.

No truly rational man is a liberal.

  41. concernedtacoma7 says:

Air America or whatever that failure was, ring a bell?

Glenn Beck gets millions to pay to watch him on the net! MSNBC has the lowest cable ratings.

    Try again!

  42. Hello pot, I would like to introduce you to the kettle.

  43. One must have the facts before spouting off tripe.

    Okay, let’s have some.

Monson is the # 1 rated talk show host in the Seattle-Tacoma market – has been for at least six years. Michael Medved would be more likely to oust him than Shultz.

But if you can provide “facts”…

  44. LeePHill says:

Monson’s numbers don’t even come close to the drive time audiences of smaller stations.

Monson was bested by Schultz (who was switched to morning recently rescheduling a local favorite Thom Hartmann) about two or three years ago.

Monson can’t even top Dave Ross’ numbers, thus he’s stuck in midday.

Of course, then there is this:

BREAKING: Dori Monson 1995-2012; Ron Reagan Starts Monday
The King of Seattle Talk Radio has been dethroned.

In an abrupt end to a remarkable 17-year run as one of Seattle’s most controversial talk show hosts, at the end of his shift Friday Dori Monson (KIRO-FM 12-3p) was given ten minutes to gather his things. Then, carrying a suitably little box of his desk’s contents, Monson was escorted out of the Bonneville radio complex on Eastlake by building security, his long reign over.

    Monson replaced by a liberal?

As Long John Baldry said, many years ago:

“Don’t try to lay no boogie woogie on the king of rock and roll.”

  45. LeePHill says:

Now I see why my nephew enjoys this.

  46. took14theteam says:

Thanks LPH, I don’t need to waste anymore time here, because you have it covered.

  47. bobcat1a says:

Talk radio is mostly “conservative” (reactionary) for one reason…progressives don’t have time to waste on mindless blather and are working and earning a living at jobs that require concentration rather than sitting in front of a radio on Social Security while whining about too much guvamint.

  48. aislander says:

“reactionary (adj.) Look up reactionary at Dictionary.com
1831, on model of Fr. réactionnaire (19c.), from réaction (see reaction). In Marxist use, opposed to revolutionary and used opprobriously in reference to opponents of communism (1858). As a noun “person considered reactionary in politics,” by 1875.”
    Online Etymological Dictionary

I already knew that of the word and those who use it…

  49. LeePHill says:

Has anyone seen my nephew? I guess he’s called “AJ” or something like that. He’s a little goofy, but most conservatives are. This blogging stuff seems to keep him out of trouble with the police. Those bails were getting expensive. He might get off probation soon.

  50. scooter6139 says:

oxb0 – Ouch! Want to try again since those “facts” just slapped you silly?

    (Thanks for that LeePHill!)

  51. scooter6139 says:

Got to love April Fools Jokes! lol.

  52. So… LeePHill posts what he thinks is a refutation… but forgets to check the date on his “proof”, and scooter wishes there was a “delete post” function for his 10:42 PM post, LOL.

Happy April fools day you two. Couldn’t be more appropriate.

Still waiting for someone to show actual numbers proving there is a more popular local host than Monson in the Seattle-Tacoma 12PM – 1PM slot.

And no, not even Dave Ross tops Monson’s numbers.

But then… it’s easy to make things up on an internet message board.

  53. You forgot to provide the obligatory links to the “Fox News viewers are stupid” college studies.

Perhaps because, in light of this letter and the posts that have ensued, that would be redundant.

I have never heard an Liberal Talk Radio – ever – so I can’t comment upon the accuracy of the letter’s caricature. I have had to suffer through Savage/Limbaugh/Beck blather when airport transport drivers have that on their radio.

This letter is just more of the same partisan “Libs are bad” nonsense that does exactly what it say the evil liberals do – provide nothing positive to the discussion, just demonize the “opposition”. We all belong to the same “team” as Americans – enough with this rah, rah, cheerleading crap. Conservatives and Liberals each provide an important voice to the Republic.

  54. averageJoseph says:

Limbaugh calling Fluke a slut went on for about five days

    Liar.

  55. LeePHill says:

    Well I’ll be a monkey’s uncle!!

I thought the joke part was “King of Seattle Radio”

Hope you enjoyed a laugh. I notice you took the time to look it up.

    :)

  56. LeePHill says:

Hey, why do people keep saying Limbaugh didn’t go on for five days at Sandra Fluke?

On February 29, 2012, after referencing Fluke’s statement that “contraceptives can cost a woman over $3000 during law school”, Limbaugh stated:
What does it say about the college co-ed Susan Fluke, who goes before a congressional committee and essentially says that she must be paid to have sex,

On March 3, Limbaugh repeated his previous attacks against Fluke and insurance coverage for contraception. Later that day he released an apology on his official website:

“For over 20 years, I have illustrated the absurd with absurdity, three hours a day, five days a week. In this instance, I chose the wrong words in my analogy of the situation. I did not mean a personal attack on Ms. Fluke.”

Oh. Nice Guy was wrong. Limbaugh only went on for four days before submitting his no-apology, apology, not five

I can understand a mistake like that. It’s sort of like when the President provides a birth certificate and people still don’t accept it, it’s just a little mistake.

  57. charliebucket says:

Monson used to be interesting and rational but something changed in him and now he is a right wing nut job.

  58. LeePHill says:

Now, for those who want to be serious about numbers

    http://www.radio-info.com/markets/seattle-tacoma

  59. CT7 – the truth is that no rational person could be a conservative in the mode of the current crop.

  60. aislander says:

xring: Merely shows how far apart the two sides are: we believe exactly the same thing about the left…

  61. Charlie,

    Monson is pandering for ratings

  62. sumyungboi says:

leephill: “I can understand a mistake like that. It’s sort of like when the President provides a birth certificate and people still don’t accept it, it’s just a little mistake.”

This is what happens when you surround yourself with the 49%. You start to believe that you’re smart and witty, and that your opinion actually carries weight among normal people.

  63. “No truly rational man is a liberal.”

Wow, 180 degrees out AND the days hypocrisy moment!
    You’ve out done yourself ct7!

  64. aislander says:

I see that k****r is driving by again. Oh, wait: I just did the same thing!

    Object lesson there.

  65. averageJoseph says:

Preston still has a comprehension problem. LOL.

  66. KnowsTheTruth says:

LeePHill – if you are a monkey’s uncle, does that make your nephew a monkey?

  67. KnowsTheTruth says:

“8% say he probably was born elsewhere, 5% say he definitely was, and 20% say they don’t know enough to say.”

Well, at least 20% are honest.

  68. It seems that Jeb Bush doesn’t agree with the conservatives

Perhaps the real reason why Jeb has continued to decline the Party’s efforts to get him to run for President – he doesn’t want to deal with the neanderthal base.

  69. How come these discussions about “entertainer” “comedian” Rush Limbaugh not having a liberal equivalent always neglect the immense success of Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert? Right wing talk radio is popular with an audience that can listen to it while they work. Left wing cable comedy is popular with an audience that watches it after work.

  70. And…..if the “lame stream media” is dominated by liberals as the dittoheads claim then this so-called dominance of the media by Right wing talkers is a contradictory statement from their own mouths.

  71. aislander says:

The right has no domination of media, beerBoy; it has domination of ONE medium.

The statists dominate all the other media…

  72. averageJoseph says:

… which is why they get their shorts in such a bunch anytime any other media stray from the msm talking points and actually exercise their journalistic duty.

  73. LeePHill says:

The mainstream media has no talking points.

    Ignorance is bliss
