RELIGION: Conservatives have launched crusade

I’m not sure what it is, but there seems to be something missing in the debate between Catholic leaders and our government.

In a genuine attempt to provide fair and equitable health care for all of us, the Obama administration has correctly balanced the important health issues of women with those of our male counterparts. This same consideration also focuses on care for infants and children and the need for affordable family health insurance. Surely Catholic leaders and conservative evangelicals agree with this equality.

At issue then, is religious doctrine and the “protection” of religious freedom. Extending the freedom for employees to receive contraceptive insurance coverage, however, is contrary to the church mandate against prescribed birth control.

What a conundrum. Whose rights are more important?

Perhaps the “pill” is not the issue; this controversy is being used to manipulate a more divisive rhetoric to convince the public that all Christian institutions are under attack – a great way to distract and alarm people. There is no war on religion in our country, but there is an outrageous conservative crusade attempting to control the outcome of our destiny.

I have enjoyed religious freedom all my life but have never been subjected to rigid, patriarchal demands from my worship leaders. I hope I will always be able to express my freedom without demanding that everyone else conform to my privileged beliefs.
