SUMNER: New festival goes in wrong direction

The planned Sumner Art and Rhubarb Pie Festival no longer highlights Main Street businesses and our small-town family heritage. The new direction the Puyallup/Sumner Chamber of Commerce seems to be taking us is for-profit for the chamber at the expense of our community.

The main feature of this new arts festival is a beer garden in a public park. For-profit truck food vendors will be located alongside Heritage Park in direct competition with our local nonprofit groups and Sumner restaurants.

Our Sumner service organizations return every dollar they make to the community. Our businesses pay the taxes that support our schools, library, senior center and community.

The new and improved Sumner Art and Rhubarb Pie Festival has taken an arts festival that highlighted art, music and community involvement and replaced it with a beer party for profit at local business expense.

The Sumner business community split with the Puyallup Chamber of Commerce over the years because its way was not the Sumner way. Is this what Sumner wants? I think it is the wrong direction.

  1. CrazyJim says:

When I see a Chamber of Commerce sticker on the door I go find someplace else to shop. The overwhelming greed from this organization is sickening.

  2. Greed? I call it fiduciary responsibility.
I sit on the 3 Boards of 3 non-profit organizations, and unless you want them all to ask for more public funding, creating sponsorhsip opportunities is what most forward thinking non-profitsmust do to be financially sustainable.
As a small business owner, I know of 3 businesses, including mine, that have benefitted from the Puyallup-Sumner Chamber of Commerce’s advocacy. I even drive from Tacoma all the way to Sumner to visit Dr. Lo, the dentist for all 8 members of my family. Why? Because of a referral from the Chamber.
I will be at the Arts festival, drinking a pint of beer from the new Sumner Microbrewery.
