LICENSE: Unlink voting from driver’s licensing

Re: “Try reasonable middle way to license illegal immigrants” (editorial, 5-27).

The editorial board missed a key point licensing undocumented drivers. The federal Motor Voting Act requires all driver’s licensing offices to provide voter registration packets. Washington and New Mexico are the only two states that require no proof of citizenship when they hand a voter registration form to anyone applying for a driver’s license.

State employees are forbidden by law to ask for proof of citizenship when handing the applicant a voter registration form. The applicant fills out the form and checks a box attesting to U.S. citizenship. No state or county officials audit voter registrations from this source.

There is more that needs to be addressed than a better way to provide noncitizens the right to drive. We might want to consider ensuring that they actually have a right to vote at the same time.

  1. Not just voting, they are serving on jurys. At least in Puyallup they are.

But that is fair after all. So many “in the dock” are illegal aliens, so they are at least being judged by a jury of their peers.

  2. bobcat1a says:

Have you reported the names of any illegal aliens voting or serving on juries? Do you know any of the names? How do you know this?

  3. I’d like to ask the letter writer about his thoughts on Citizens United?

  4. According to the Secretary of State’s office –

    https://wei.sos.wa.gov/agency/osos/en/voters/Pages/voter_eligibility.aspx

There IS a requirement of citizenship for voting. I’m not sure where this letter writer got his information. Probably a right wing organization trying to frustrate voting rights.

Last night, Lawrence O’Donnell interviewed a Florida Congressman, along with a constituent who got a letter saying her voting rights were suspended because she wasn’t a legal citizen. She has lived in the US her entire life.

    It’s their new game.

  5. An “illegal alien” wouldn’t be tried by a jury. They would be deported.

    Thus, no need for “peers”.

    Lies, lies, lies, liiiies…..

  6. IQ88 – fyi – jury members are selected from the lists of ELIGIBLE VOTERS. Some of who do not have driver’s licenses.

Larry – Florida 2012 is just a repeat of Florida 2000.

Also notice how once again this caging attempt comes to close to the election to give people a chance to respond.
