KALAKALA: Lemon can be transformed

Re: “Where the Kalakala belongs: Anywhere but here” (editorial, 5-9).

When life hands you a lemon, make lemonade. I love lemonade. Watch me!

(Anderson owns the Hylebos Waterway berth where the Kalakala has been moored for eight years.)

  1. alindasue says:

The perfect lemonade at this point would be to convert the KalaKala to a nice art deco restaurant like Top of the Ocean was.

  2. SwordofPerseus says:

Should only cost about $20-25 million. I was involved in a ferry to restaurant conversion in the San Francisco Bay area in the late 80’s. The project was started with the best intentions, however the cost of making an old vessel into a modern restaurant is very costly and very complicated. It never served a single meal and the owner sunk about $4 million dollars (1987 dollars) before he gave up and went broke.

So, Karl J. Anderson is going to take care of the Kalakala! Great Karl! How you gonna do it?

  4. Frankenchrist says:

The Kalakala would make a fine artificial reef.

I like alindasue’s idea. It breaks my heart to look at those old pilings every day – that was such a cool building. Heck, if they can re-do the Cliff House (looks great, BTW – good food too), maybe a new TOTO is possible.

And the fact the Kalakala is a metal vessel would discourage the “Carbone” types too.

But here’s hoping that something viable can be done.

No surprise where all of the negative vibes are emanating here. “Open minded”, “positive”, “forward-thinking”, “progressive” – LMAO. Happy-face cynics with “can’t-do” eyes hiding behind blue-tinted sunglasses.

Karl Anderson knew what he was buying. I was wondering for several years when he was going to try to get money and stick taxpayers with an old ferry for his own investment. Don’t spend anymore dollars nor ask taxpayers to fix a broken down boat.

You don’t make lemonade out of a shrivelled up moldy lemon- you toss it in the garbage. Unless you want to make everyone sick.
