TACOMA: Drivers need advance warning on races

Sunday mornings find my husband and I heading for church in Auburn. Normally, we take Ruston Way to get to Interstate 5. This past Sunday we headed out as usual, only to find Ruston Way closed, so we headed for North 30th, but it was closed at the bottom of the hill. So we headed up McCarver thinking we could get onto Interstate 705 that way, but no – every street leading to I-705 was blocked.

Runners were everywhere. It took us 25 minutes to get out of Tacoma! While we always leave a little early just in case, this whole scenario made us late for church.

I don’t mind the races. What I do mind is that there is no warning. Would it be so difficult for there to be a requirement for race sponsors to post a newspaper ad letting us know when and where the race will take place so we can choose an alternate route? Is it too much to ask that signs be put up in advance on the streets that will be blocked so we can plan?

There was absolutely nothing to let us know in advance of this race. Please, somebody in authority, do something about this!

That sounds like a notice for the somewhat local paper to report on things coming up in Tacoma that will affect many people. Hmm, can we find a local paper to print this information in a prominent section where people are likely to see it? If only.

    Gawd no kiddig. . .

  3. All of these events happen every year, same roads are blocked….if you have lived in Tacoma for awhile, you should know how to detour around these annual events, not rocket science!

  4. alindasue says:

I’m not involved in racing at all and I knew the race was going on. It was mentioned in TNT.

  5. I’ve complained about this forever. Most recently in a TNT article comment post where I managed to P’Off most of the local bicycle community! HAAA!

I see absolutely no reason to shut down major arterials in this city just so a vast MINORITY of people can run down the middle of the street.

If they want to have their silly “green” events, let them use Pt Defiance the way the Sount-to-Narrows hass done it for decades!

They have no sympathy from me, OR any support.
