RELIGION: Issue was no petty ‘spat’

I strongly object to the headline “Presbytery dismisses 4 churches in gay spat” that appeared on the front page of The News Tribune (4-27).

Webster’s New World Dictionary defines “spat” as “a petty quarrel, or dispute.” The decisions by the four churches that decided to leave the Presbyterian Church USA, and the Presbytery of Olympia that released them, were thoughtfully and prayerfully made, as well as a long time in coming.

As was indicated in the article, but not in the headline, the issue is more than having to do with the participation of gays. The decision to remain with the Presbyterian Church USA or not cannot be considered an inconsequential “spat.”

Strangely, we are being told that it was more than just “gays” that had to do with the decision to separate, yet no one is disclosing anything. I wonder why.

  2. Headlines have a limited number of characters available – hence “4” instead of “Four” and “Spat” instead of another word indicating conflict that you would approve of.

That being said – the TNT headline editor at times makes some horrendous decisions.

  3. “Gay fray” sounds better than “gay spat.”

WWII was a fray but never just a spat.

  4. Good grief, bBoy. “Spat” has a very specific connotation as Ms. Hays has pointeed out. The headline is misleading, as was the story in suggesting there was little emotion. It was a shabby superficial article.

  5. RLangdon says:

Calling it a “spat” is at least better than calling it a “snit”!

Who gives a rip what they call it?

  6. averageJoseph says:

Adjusting font size allows for more characters… ;)

  7. sozo – in the first paragraph I was attempting to understand the reasons for the choices made by the headline editor in a non-judgmental manner. In the second paragraph I made my judgment known.

  8. If headline editors did not at times make some horrendous decisions, then Jay Leno would have very little to put in the “books” he as “authored”.

    “Nun admits to bad habit”

  9. Adjusting font size allows for more characters… ;)

Will those new characters actually be new or just sockpuppets for the usual suspects?

  10. averageJoseph says:

    … you first Arts.

  11. LornaDoone says:

    wassat, LorenzoFino?

  12. LornaDoone says:

I still see the religious right nitpicking words and no one is coughing up what the big hubbub was, other than parishioners wanting to stop the discrimination of gay members.

Since it was “more than a spat”, I would think that someone could spill the beans on the issue, as opposed to playing DictionaryDefinitionDump.

  13. Jimm – you have to stop living in the past. “Arts” was a screen name I used about 5 years ago. Before that I was beerBoy. After that I was beerBoy2. And after that I was beerBoy.

Care to share your list of nom de cyber guerres?

  14. averageJoseph says:

LOL, yep. Did you forget the conversations your dual monikers had with each other? You know, the ones where Arts would tell beerBoy how smart he was and viseversa??? That is until you forgot which moniker was posting and got caught. (L.P.H. is familiar with that faux pas)

  15. You know, the ones where Arts would tell beerBoy how smart he was and viseversa???

Since you have an extensive archive of my posts I expect you can find those posts you claim exist.

But you can’t because that is just a figment of your imagination.

I posted once as arts referencing beerBoy. You responded asking who I was. I came clean. The rest of your story is fiction.

  16. The headline Joan Hays has a problem with, was: “Presbytery dismisses 4 churches in gay spat”

Lots of discussion here about everything else under the sun, but what about alternative headlines? How could this have been better worded? Any suggestions?

    I’ll start:

original: Presbytery dismisses 4 churches in gay spat

modified: 4 Churches Ejected By Anti-Gay Presbytery

    Oh this is ripe.

As usual, AJ/LF/LMNOPQURSTUVWXYZ has nothing to share about the thread topic.

  18. averageJoseph says:

Sorry bB, at that time we were able to delete our own posts… and you did. It was that very incident that spawned my famed archives. You don’t remember? You’re excuse was something about hiding from the IT people at work. I laughed then, as I do now… like they wouldn’t know you were posting from your computer at work.
Anyway, you, I, and a few of the old timers here remember and know the truth. ;)

  19. averageJoseph says:

LOL… I actually have one. Funny, you were doing then exactly what you scold others for doing.

Just how many casualties were suffered under Slick W’s reign as opposed to casualties under Chimp W’s?

    .
Can you IMAGINE someone calling the current resident of the whitehouse what you regulary called the latter.

  20. LornaDoone says:

AJ – the topic is “Presbyterian Churchs separating”

Do you have something to contribute or is this your personal thread for stalking beerBoy and demonstrating that you have an online personality disorder that makes you catalog and archive posts of others, all the while ignoring your behavior on the forum?

Between beerBoy’s comments and your obsession about me and my family (none of whom have ever participated on the TNT forums) you are heading for your next suspension.

  21. took14theteam says:

    To the thread police LornaD.

If you don’t like the direction of the thread, don’t read it.

Typical leftist. Instead of not reading/listening/viewing things that offend them, they have to use “The Man” to stop the offender.

There is a red X (for Windows users) or a red circle (for Mac users) that you can click on to close the window.

    Try it sometime….

  22. took14theteam says:

RLangdon, you strike a resemblance to someone from the past on here. Could be a little mucky….

    ;-)

  23. RL, you are misinformed.

There are deeper theological issues than I’m guessing folks here want to explore. Suffice it to say that the authority of scripture is in question, as is the divinity of Christ. A manifestation of this in-denomination discussion, going on now for several years, is the manifestation of the gay issue. It is a symptom not a cause.

For these four churches, the time came for them to sever ties with the larger denomination in order to get on with the mission they believe God is calling them to.

For other churches in the presbytery, that time has not come and may never come. Some are comfortable with the trends of the larger denommination, others remain faithful to the denomination while the dialogue continues.

For some who frequent this blog, and I fear there too many, if a matter doesn’t tidily fall into either the black/white or pro/con realm, there is little interest. There is a desire instead to demonize one group and lionize the other. For mature, intelligent Christians, this doesn’t work which is why folks from the departing churches met today with those who choose to stay in the denomination…to fellowship together in love, if not in complete agreement with one another.

  24. averageJoseph says:

Man… I had a great weekend. The regular leftists provided entertainment for me the few times I visited and the weather was perfect for what I wanted to (and did) accomplish.

  25. LornaDoone says:

tookAJ…..you don’t like it when I play your game????? LOL

Who whines the most about “thread drift”, “multiples”, etc?

I took advantage of the opportunity to point out your hypocrisy and it worked perfectly.

    Thanks

  26. LornaDoone says:

sozo – so you don’t know what the reason is for the separation either?

So many saying it’s bigger than the gay issue, but no one is saying what the issue is, if it’s other than the gay issue.

At least you took a few paragraphs to say nothing and enlighten the rest of the non-discriminatory community as to how you are among the annointed. You’re dependable that way.

    Nothing narcisstic there.

  27. Your response is sad, LD, and very telling. You see, I DID give you the reasons, but you are not interested in actual dialogue or reason; you just want to fight. I’m not interested. Weeks ago, I started scrolling past klu’s posts; now I will do the same with yours, which should give me roughly an hour of extra time each day given the amount of verbage you expend on this blog.

  28. P.S. Look up narcissism, and tell your pal klu to look up the word hypocrisy. Neither of you seem to actually know what these words mean.

  29. averageJoseph says:

    Shoo fly.

  30. Klumer – just another example of right wing rhetoric without facts.
