BIRTH CONTROL: Humane way to curb population

Letter by David C. Ogilvie, Gig Harbor on April 2, 2012 at 11:17 am with 52 Comments »

Anyone who follows the news has, no doubt, noticed the very spirited debate on contraception – to use or not to use, to fund or not to fund. And after a month or so of charges and counter-charges – faith-based, secular and political – it seems to have ended in a stalemate.

Whether women gained additional rights or insurance-covered contraception, I’m not sure, but I do believe they won a moral victory. Daring to speak truth to power was courageous and, in time, I believe, will benefit all of us.

As fellow inhabitants of an overcrowded planet, we all face the same problem. A growing number of people competing for diminishing resources will only get worse as we multiply. As we have done in the past, we could rely on war, famine, disease and natural disaster to stabilize the population, but I think it’s much more humane to practice effective birth control.

So, I say thanks to all the determined, well-informed women who fight for their rights.

  1. Was someone attempting to deny women their right to (and obligation) to prevent unwanted children? Where did you read that?

  2. Sozo – try reading something other that fox spews and rpot talking poingts.

  3. sandblower says:

The war on women coming from the extreme right is a fact sozo. You can bury your head and deny it, but that does not diminish the truth.

  4. Pacman33 says:

When has the debate been anything except ‘should faith-based institutions be required, by law, to provide and pay for contraception, ella and Plan B regardless of the institution’s beliefs and teachings’?

Women should be offended by manipulators like David, who assume they are over-emotional and naive enough to fall for this nonsense.

  5. Vox_clamantis_in_deserto says:

Pac, David is a consistent left wing talking point mouthpiece in the LTE section. Obviously, now that the Martin/ Zimmerman hysteria distraction is losing traction, it’s time for the soldiers to try reigniting the previous diversionary tactic.

After all, without ginned-up incidents and phony issues, what choice does the re-elect 0bama faction have? Run on his record? ROTFLMFAOLZ!

  6. “Was someone attempting to deny women their right” (all of them)

Yes, an you know it, you support it and you will as always, blindly vote for the party that is doing it.

  7. bobcat1a says:

Sozo, pac, and vox: It’s not important if you believe there’s a war on women as long as a substantial majority of women do. AND THEY DO.

  8. Frankenchrist says:

The Republicans have declared war on women. Remember that in November.

  9. sandblower says:

their cover was blown long ago. we know them for who they are. they are warriors against women and the rest of us who desire to lead our lives as we see fit, which includes no impact on the lives of other persons or opposition to the law.

  10. “When has the debate been anything except ‘should faith-based institutions be required, by law, to provide and pay for contraception”

Have you been paying attention at all?

  11. “War On Women” ….. What a ridiculous, typically Liberal, false but supporting their lies, buzz phrase.

There is no “War on Women”….But there are a lot of people who do not want to be FORCED by the Liberal government to contribute to someone else’s birth control, whether its a pill, a box of condoms, or an abortion.

Want to indulge in your gratification without risk? Fine….Just pay for it yourself!

  12. ….Just like all the hooey about pharmacies CHOOSING not to supply certain items to prevent contraception, the Liberals go up in arms!

They scream and cry about their “rights” and how some “religious freak” might be infringing on them, but by God they don’t give a hoot about anyone else’s “rights”.

Typical Liberalism….Its all bout THEM and what THEY want. Just a bunch of whining little babies in adult bodies.

  13. Dale – perhaps you are right, comparing women to livestock and requiring them to bring stillborn “small American children” to fullterm because, after all, hogs and cows have to shouldn’t be considered a “war on women”

Rep. Terry England (R-Auburn) compared pregnant women carrying stillborn fetuses to the cows and pigs on his farm. According to Rep. England and his warped thought process, if farmers have to “deliver calves, dead or alive,” then a woman carrying a dead fetus, or one not expected to survive, should have to carry it to term.

“War On Women” ….. What a ridiculous, typically Liberal, false but supporting their lies, buzz phrase”

The new theme folks – “don’t look at this, nothing happening here”

Only one problem for the conservatives. It is happening and people are responding, despite their attempt to tell them otherwise.

I see we are still carrying holy water for the Catholic Church’s political message. Has anyone told them they can removed themselves from paying for health care insurance for employees and just give the employees that money to purchase there own? Then they wouldn’t be “buying contraceptives” (as if they were standing in front of the pharmacist).

12 key states for the 2012 election – Obama leads both Republican challengers by close to 10 points and with women he is up 18 points. Tell those women there is “nothing happening here”.

Don’t you know, bobcat – women aren’t smart enough to know there is not a war against them (heavy sarcasm)

  16. “It’s not important if you believe there’s a war on women as long as a substantial majority of women do. AND THEY DO.”

This may be one of the dumbest comments I’ve ever seen posted here. Just because a mob of women have been indoctrinated to believe a lie does NOT make the lie suddenly true.

Let’s see, can we think of any other times in history when a substantial majority of people believed something that was totally riduculous, and dangerous? Think.

The problem is not that I’ve failed to read up on this subject thoroughly, the problem…for you anyway…is that I HAVE read and I am a woman, and I see this nonsense for exactly what it is.

  17. Dcr628 says: “There is no “War on Women”….But there are a lot of people who do not want to be FORCED by the Liberal government to contribute to someone else’s birth control, whether its a pill, a box of condoms, or an abortion.”

As opposed to the Right Wing Conservative’s non invasive vaginal probe legislation??

  18. sozo appropriates aislander’s Godwin Infraction but ups the ante by comparing contraception to the Holocaust.

I know you admire his use of big words sozo but, sometimes you should think before aping his worst tendencies.

  19. “What a ridiculous, typically Liberal, false but supporting their lies, buzz phrase.”

I wonder how you feel about the ‘typical conservative, false but supporting their lies, buzz phrase’ you post?

  20. “I HAVE read and I am a woman, and I see this nonsense for exactly what it is.”

And you of course always read everything with an open eye, never only reading one sided slanted information from sources with an agenda that agrees with you own predetermined opinion and you NEVER get any thing wrong……..is that what you expect us to believe?

  21. BlaineCGarver says:

Gawd…liberal idiots…Girls are just pissed because they might have to cough up a few bucks to be footloose and amoral….Go buy a box of rubbers and shut up, or are you really so stubborn that you would not insist that the man have one?

  22. menopaws says:

Hey boys (notice I don’t refer to this crowd as men) schoolyard bullies are becoming like a deer during hunting season. There is a target on their backs.,,,,,,Get over yourselves—this time the women are in charge and it’s not looking hopeful for the Bible thumpers who want their women, pregnant and silent. We vote and we also are not quite as easily conned by a “strategy” change………Or, as my husband will say…” you ladies have long memories”…….and, we hold a grudge. So, keep spewing out your Fox News garbage—it’s nice therapy for all of you. Come November, the women will vote and according to the polls—most Republicans need to check their backsides to see where the target is painted!!!!! It is always amusing to listen to the men on this blog–

  23. “The war on women” is a flat out lie concocted by the liberals to try to re elect their socialist leader for another term. No one that I’ve heard wants to ban contraceptives for women. All they are saying is that if want to have sex, pay for it yourself. Where did this “right’ to free birth control come from? Show me where that “right” is written in the Constitution. Liberals want free food (stamps), free college, free housing, free medical care, free sex but no personal responsibility. How in the world did these people ever get to be in such large numbers in this country?

  24. menopaws, so you actually have a husband? Poor guy! Why do you think you are in charge of anything? Because your husband told you that you are? The fact of the matter is that you are in charge of NOTHING!

  25. SandyQue says:

    how sexist of you, frosty

  26. LornaDoone says:

“Just because a mob of women have been indoctrinated to believe a lie does NOT make the lie suddenly true.”

Imagine the outrage if you took this statement, removed “women” and inserted “Christians”.

You have to love the hypocrisy

  27. LornaDoone says:

“Girls are just pissed because they might have to cough up a few bucks to be footloose and amoral….Go buy a box of rubbers and shut up, or are you really so stubborn that you would not insist that the man have one?

So, explain, Blaine. What responsibility do the men have? Is that part of your paygrade? Maybe if the man wants to play he needs to have his testicles tied and be the responsible party.

  28. frosty asks, “How in the world did these people ever get to be in such large numbers in this country?”

Becuase frosty, Liberals sell lies disguised as a nice warm fuzzy group hug, and stupid people love group hugs.

I just think its kind of fun to put ants in the pants of these screwy local liberal idiots and watch them dance! That kluwercharacter is SO much fun to poke!

  29. LornaDoone says:

Dcr – trollin’ for some action, huh?

Why don’t you join Blaine and frosty and see if you three can get a group rate on vasectomies? Since you all are so big on personal responsibility on the issue of birth control, lets see you put your “money where your mouth is”, so to speak.

    ::::hook in mouth sign::::::

  30. took14theteam says:

    Dough boy.

The man is 50% responsible for sex as well as the woman is. So if said woman becomes pregnant, the man should have 50% say in wether or not the child is killed. Since he will be forced by gun point to provide 50% of the child’s support for 18 years the man should be able to decide if he wants to pay that money or not. If he chooses not to, he should be able to have the woman abort the child. Just like the woman can abort the child against the man’s wishes.

  31. Frankenchrist says:

GRAND CHUTE — Police say they have arrested the person they think placed a homemade explosive device that went off Sunday and damaged Planned Parenthood’s Gillett Street clinic. …

The device was placed on the clinic’s windowsill about 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Its explosion started a small fire, which caused minor damage to an examination room and burned itself out before firefighters arrived.

Police say a witness saw a white sport-utility vehicle leave Planned Parenthood at the same time flames were seen coming from the building. Detectives corroborated that information through security video, which also showed distinctive markings on the vehicle.

Investigators learned a similar vehicle was involved in a crash in a neighboring community after the Planned Parenthood incident was reported and was towed from the scene.

Police inspected the vehicle and met with the driver. Investigators say the driver matched the physical description of the man observed on Planned Parenthood security video.

  32. Since he will be forced by gun point to provide 50% of the child’s support for 18 years the man should be able to decide if he wants to pay that money or not.

“Forced by gun point”? Golly, I bet your Father’s Day cards are such outpourings of love and affection….

  33. LornaDoone, how sexist of you! “maybe if a man wants to play he needs to have his testicles tied and be a responsible party”. It’s not the men I hear crying about infringement on their “reproductive rights”. Question, what kinds of contraception devices do you feel that your neighbors should pay for your pleasure? How about buying you a book on how to use the “rhythm method? Or how about a vibrator? “Hook in the mouth sign”..

  34. What many of you fail to realize is that it has not been that long since contraception was illegal in many parts of the US. Santorum – who is supported by many GOPers – wants to go back to those days.

  35. “Bible thumpers…want their women pregnant and silent” Really? Seems you suffer from severe bigotry and prejudice. But don’t let that get in your way of having your say.

And bBoy, save your Godwin nonsense. Read for clarity. I did not make the comparison you suggest. I DID point out that there have been significant times in history when “a substantial majority” of folks accepted an evil in their midst.

And yes, I do appreciate aislander’s vocabulary. It so happens we share a world view as well. Perhaps theres a correlation between big words and actual intelligence, and we should demand more rigorous vocabulary studies for American students! That’s a joke for those of you who might get yourselves all wrapped around the axle over it.

Meno…I am a woman. A thoughtful, relatively intelligent woman actually, though far from brilliant. But smart enough to know that this war on women is a political concotion and is just plan nonsense. I’m sure there are good reasons for your jaded view of men and your insult to women who disagree with you, but I hope you can recognize that it is IN FACT, jaded.

  36. Mr. Ogilvie, there is another human way to curb the population AND help with the cost of health care. Have you ever read The Giver?

It’s a simple solution really…you just escort all the terminally ill and the elderly through a big double door and “realease” them from their pain and suffering. Sort of like Rover.

And voila, there’s all sorts of money to redistribute to others for their health care, there are more natural resources to go around AND those poor souls will be so grateful that you treated them “humanely” in the end.

  37. I did not make the comparison you suggest.

Oh yes…you just made the implication rather than the declaration. How very honest of you!

  38. LornaDoone says:

“LornaDoone, how sexist of you! “Hook in the mouth sign”..”

So, in frosty’s world, a man carries no responsibility for birth control, it’s all the woman’s responsibility? Since when did anyone say it’s my neighbor’s responsibility to pay for my birth control?

As to your suggestion of a “vibrator”, I’m certain it is a welcome thought to those who have spent 15 minutes in your company.

  39. LornaDoone says:

“But smart enough to know that this war on women is a political concotion”

So, what would you call mandatory vaginal ultrasounds, not recommended by doctors, but demanded by Republican lawmakers?

  40. LornaDoone says:

“the man should have 50% say in wether or not the child is killed. Since he will be forced by gun point to provide 50% of the child’s support for 18 years the man should be able to decide if he wants to pay that money or not.”

In most cases, the man does have 50% say on the issue of abortion (as opposed to child killing, which was demonstrated by George Zimmerman). I’ve yet to see a governmental agency use a gun to enforce child support payments, and frankly, we taxpayers are taking care of the responsibility that many fathers lack.

But what I’m reading is that the “father” should be able to (1) choose not to allow the abortion and (2) choose to not pay for the resultant child.

Fondly memorable of the guy on Alexandra Pelosi’s film that said “I need food stamps because I don’t get unemployment”.

  41. LornaDoone, so you had to find a way to get Zimmerman into the discussion? Perhaps the female side of the equation should be to show a little more selectivity about who she copulates with? Duh! To add insult to injury, you even stoop to include something that a Pelosi said. Where’s your quotes from Huffington Post and Media Matters?

  42. LornaDoone, I don’t know about you, but the women who choose to spend time with me, are not of afraid of a strong male. And BTW, it’s much more than 15 minutes.

  43. Haaaaa Uh Oh! Now its getting naughty in here!! :D

The image of Frosty and LornaDoone somehow brings to mind a milkshake and a package of cookies…..but not nearly as sweet! HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

  44. it’s much more than 15 minutes.

The great thing about b.s.ing about your own sexual prowess with an anonymous pseudonym in virtual space is that it is highly unlikely that anyone with direct experience will know who it is that is doing the bragging so they wouldn’t think to tell the truth to your lie.

  45. Sheesh…..these days it takes me 15 minutes just to take off my pants! Now THATS birth control!!

  46. …Oh and by the way, no matter how anyone tries to deny it..the phrase “war on women” is nothing more than a liberal ploy to fire up the mindless. Which of course is a well versed, oft practiced method of the left. Next week it’ll be something else. and their minions will fall for that too.

  47. …and of course in a matter of minutes, that idea will be answered by a dozen local liberal loons with the standard and expected, “Yeah well what about when the Republicans say this…that, and the other?”…

The same old story, detracting from facts to put guilt somewhere else…which of course is yet ANOTHER tactic of the left to fire up the mindless.

  48. “Oh and by the way, no matter how anyone tries to deny it..the phrase “war on women” is nothing more than a liberal ploy to fire up the mindless.”

Does the phrase “war on Christianity” ring a bell for you? You know, the conservative “ploy to fire up the mindless”.

  49. The war on anything is a simplification in order to fire up the mindless – The War on Terror being the most recent and foremost example.

“Oh tie a yellow ribbon round that ol’ oak tree…”
or better yet a magnetic decal on the SUV.

  50. Ahhh there it is! It took a few hours but “tburki” was right on cue with the “what about when the conservatives say THIS!!”

As usual, and as expected, most topics in this silly rag denegrate into “neener neener neener! Sheesh.

And actually Tburki, there has been a “war on Christianity” for centuries! Where there is not, not ever has been a war on women.

Either way it’s all a load of hooey.

  51. You and I agree on THAT point Beerboy. Its a rarity but it has happened on occasion over the years! :D

And now that you bring up the ‘war on terror’, there never should have been a war…just a swift, severe “payback” slap upside the head. Two towers and three jetliners and several thousand Americans (including innocent Muslims, and citizens of other nations, by the way) die at the hand of fanatics, we should have taken the payback to the front door of the fanatics hometowns.

One more random attack, one more random terrorist hometown to dust, the choice is up to them to keep on playing their game.

  52. ….that tactic carried out and it wouldn’t have been long before the locals in their cities began to find the terrorists themselves and deal with them out of pure survival instinct.
