RAMPAGE: Appointed counsel should be adequate

Re: “Staff Sgt. Bales, family seek help with legal bills” (TNT, 3-27).

I guess I am missing something here. The public is being asked to contribute to the defense of a man who is accused of murdering men, women and children; a man who has single-handedly forced his government to alter foreign and military policy; a man who has compromised the risk factor and safety of every American in Afghanistan; a man who has sullied the reputation of America and Americans in the view of the rest of the world, regardless of his guilt.

Imagine if Bales had gone on a rampage in Lakewood, killing and burning entire families whom he had never met. No matter the potential reasons or extenuating circumstances of his actions, this would be a case of a heinous, incomprehensible crime. Yet because it occurred overseas in a war zone, amidst a culture we barely understand and scorn, it warrants a public call to defense.

Also, if I am not mistaken, was it not Bales and his family who chose perhaps the most famous and expensive attorney in the state as their representative? And now they can’t afford him?

The military will select a defense attorney. Given the clear-cut nature of “did he” or “didn’t he,” it would seem that anyone familiar with the law would be adequate.

I can only imagine the reaction of Afghans who read that the American public is financially supporting the defense of someone they can only consider a monster. Please.

  1. aislander says:

High-profile cases attract high-profile lawyers. It would’ve happened even if the Bales had been given a court-appointed attorney…

  2. Two minor points:
    1. Regardless of the nature of the crime Bales gets a fair trial and retains the presumption of innocents.

    2. Bales can also choose his own defense attorney.
